Such trains are a long tradition in our country.It's a tradition very reminiscent of the ceremony Britain puts on for dead monarchs. Similarly, the typical inauguration is an analogous, if more subdued, counterpart to the typical British coronation. It's a relic of our history— we were the first modern Western country to try making a democracy, and we did so in a fairly primitive era, so however forcefully we thought we were breaking away from monarchy, we couldn't help but shake a culture based on the celebrity of a single Ruler. It's not just the ceremonies. Look at how presidents are treated as uniquely worthy of respect. Look at how presidents are credited or blamed for laws when laws are actually passed by Congress. Look at the turnout for presidential vs. midterm elections. Look at all the crazies in this very thread who think that even polite and relatively tepid criticism of a dead president is an unforgivable offense. Ghosts of the British monarchy haunt our culture, even multiple centuries after we became independent. |
