I don't see why not:

SEPTA in Philly now has turnstiles on the Regional Rail (at Center City stations) they have phased in with the Key Card. They also have non-turnsti;e readers at all outlying stations where eventually you will swipe when you get on and again when you get off.

I can't see why the MTA can't follow suit.

Imagine an INTEGRATED SYSTEM where those holes were filled by increased round-the-clock Metro North/LIRR service PLUS free-transfer feeder buses whose schedules were integrated with the rail system.

Simple fair (fare) trade? If you're making it easier for city residents to ride the commuter rail, it should be equally easier for commuter rail passengers to ride the subway.

Plus the snobbery will disappear if it becomes more affordable to live out in the suburbs, and cutting out the need to buy an unlimited MC on top of an unlimited LIRR/MNRR ticket will go a long way towards that.

Can you imagine 1,000 people getting of at a time at Hicksville or Ronkonkoma and having to tap out before running to their car ? The very idea or replicating SEPTA's silliness in NY here is laughable.

Try installing turnstiles at all 5 or 6 entrances to NYPS Tracks 13 to 16 and see what Amtrak and NJT have to say about that.

Now that I think of it Denver seems to have followed the Melbourne model somewhat, though a PoP variant. Because everything is via visual inspection, the passes need to be pre-purchased, but you can buy a day pass on a bus or at a vending machine for your zones and it's good whether you're taking Commuter Rail, bus or light rail.

I can't imagine you're ever going to get a $2.75 fare to fly on LIRR from NYP to the edge of Queens unless the ridership it generates pays for the increase in service that would be necessary to accommodate everyone. Without having done any kind of analysis on ridership impact, I'd say as a quick idea that a better way would be a modified zone structure:

Zone 1: NYP & GCT
Zone 2: Current Zone 1 stations in Queens and Brooklyn
Zone 3: Current zone 3 stations

Zone 1 - Zone 2: $4.25 (City Ticket)
Zone 1 - Zone 3: $6.50 (Express Bus)
Zone 2 - Zone 3: $4.25 (City Ticket)
Same Zone: $2.75 (Bus/Subway)

Free transfer TO subway/bus, $2.75 deducted from fare when transfering FROM subway/bus. Fare gates at city zone stations.

YES, you MUST pay taxes for transit even if you never use it.

1) Your employees use it
2) Your customers use it
3) It keeps more traffic off of the streets so that you may continue to use your gas guzzling hyper huge private limo car which costs $20/hr to park.

once MTA became the owner/operator of the various rail systems, maintaining the historic class/former RR co based fare distinctions for trips between similar points is no longer justified. Clearly, if there are off peak and reverse commute trains with unused capacity, offering those seats to Metrocard holders benefits everyone.

Caltrain has readers on the platforms and random POP checks. They use the same 'Clipper' card as most SF Bay Area transit agencies. This is payment convenience but not fare integration although there is begining to be some agitation for same as we have 27 or so agencies.

" so that you may continue to use your gas guzzling hyper huge private limo car which costs $20/hr to park."

OK, we both know that NYC was built around and cannot function without the subway. But car service/taxis aren't a toy of the 1//10th%. Those people arrange for things and people to be brought to them, a car is something that takes them to the airport.
The rest of us, 'cept for total railfans, use whatever fits the job to get around. During rush hours that's the subway, at other times it may be a car. For some it's a bicycle, but good luck carrying your dry cleaning or a sheet of drywall on that.

Car service is going to be some nasty taxi-thing, such as pretzeling yourself into the back of a Ford Edge or being semi-comfortable in an Uber Pool Toyota Camry, which is still 100x better than being in proximity to the subway slasher, platform pusher or the combined sweat of 127 people, of whom 20 haven't washed in 24 hours, 3 in 24 days.

Riding is a car is hardly extravagant.

The ownership of an automobile in the CBD is very extravagant.

There is a very limited amount of highway space in the CBD. It should be limited to trucks, buses and public cars. Private cars should not be allowed in. Even peeps who live in the CBD would do better renting a car when it is needed, indeed they ought to use public transit to get out of the city and then rent their car in New Jersey or on Long Island.

Leastwise that is what the LION would do, and indeed did do when him lived in the city.

You want a private car in the CBD, you ought to pay a $100 daily fee.

The ownership of an automobile in the CBD is very extravagant.

I did it for 38 years for a very reasonable price. My total annual car expenses were never over $5000 (yes, that includes depreciation of purchase costs), and often considerably less. I stopped doing it this spring and am now renting when necessary because the number of car trips I take locally has greatly decreased over time.

While I agree with you about auto ownership in the CBD in general, there are certain individuals for whom neither public transport nor taxis/car services are not an option. I normally prefer to use public transport for most of my travel, but if I have a gig in the CBD which I often do, I can’t pack the many instruments I play and my PA system into either a bus, train or even a cab so I need the car and it has to be at the ready for my last minute gigs which I get quite a few of. If I had to charge the pub owners the amount of money necessary to offset the cost of a car service, they wouldn’t be able to afford to hire me. There are also occupations such as doctors and other medical and emergency service personnel who need to be able to get to a hospital or other facility at a moment’s notice sometimes with specialized implements for whom public transit is also not an option.

While I understand the need to move 'freight', one wonders whether that makes economic sense unless you use the vehicle for many other errands/trips. Consider that owning, parking, maintaining, and insuring a car is not cheap.

On many occasions,I have been sitting home on a Friday or Saturday evening with nothing to do when I would get a phone call to do a gig that night. Since my car is garaged with all my instruments and equipment already loaded, all I need to do is go and start the engine and drive to the gig. If I had to use a car service, I would have to hope that the car service vehicle would be able to catty all my equipment, arrive exactly when needed and the take the time to load my gear and then upon arrival, make sure I didn’t forget anything I needed. With my own car everything is ready to go and in the unlikely event I left anything behind, all I would need to do is go the the car and get what I needed.

A van is exactly what I have. The problem with merely charging to come into the CBD is that people who can use public transit still pay the fees to drive rather than take a train or bus and sit back and relax on the way to/from work. Outright prohibition might harm people like me who do need to use their own vehicles. When I had gigs in Long Island, I would be annoyed at the number of large gas guzzling cars driving along the Sunrise Hwy slowing down my ride, while LIRR trains were going by with plenty of empty seats available.

clearly, you are analagous to a tradesperson whose tools/supplies are likewise stocked in a vehicle. I am NOT here to prevent you or they from carrying on the trades/professions in question. Not very relaxing on a jam-packed train or bus. Plus, getting on and off mimics the stress level of driving in and out. Buses get caught in traffic too, and trains do get delayed.

However, even though I drive a van, it is still registered as a passenger vehicle, not commercial so how would the difference be able to be determined. If I registered my car as a commercial vehicle then I would be barred from certain highways that I need to get to my destinations.
