OK, we both know that NYC was built around and cannot function without the subway. But car service/taxis aren't a toy of the 1//10th%. Those people arrange for things and people to be brought to them, a car is something that takes them to the airport.
The rest of us, 'cept for total railfans, use whatever fits the job to get around. During rush hours that's the subway, at other times it may be a car. For some it's a bicycle, but good luck carrying your dry cleaning or a sheet of drywall on that.

Car service is going to be some nasty taxi-thing, such as pretzeling yourself into the back of a Ford Edge or being semi-comfortable in an Uber Pool Toyota Camry, which is still 100x better than being in proximity to the subway slasher, platform pusher or the combined sweat of 127 people, of whom 20 haven't washed in 24 hours, 3 in 24 days.

Riding is a car is hardly extravagant.
