Re: Tuscarora Almanac for September 22

I can't help that you were a trainmaster and all you saw were R10s signed up for CC service sitting in Pitkin.

I can only tell that I lived, worked and went to school along the A and CC and I know what I rode and what year(s) I rode it and I know that I saw AND rode R38s as well as R10s on the CC through 1984.

I can personally testify to seeing (and riding) them on the J- once. It was December 1999, I was riding from Broad to Essex in the morning rush. I was pleasantly surprised.

I noticed that the letter J was different that on the R42s/40Ms. On the Slant, it had a real fishhook look to it- the hook part went up at least 1/3 of the vertical part of the letter- and it seemed less rounded at the bottom.

That was the one and only time I ever even saw them on the J. I thought at the time and still do think that the set was borrowed from the L. Maybe there were a bunch of 42/40Ms acting up that day and East NY had no spares, so they borrowed a set from Canarsie...

Thank You.

So that would be 1986- early '87... (as we know, the N/R terminal switch was on 5/24/87). So after then, those Slants would have been on the Yellow B or the N.

Many times equipment not normally assigned to a line would show up there if that was what was available to make service. On the IND I can recall at least one train of R-1/9s used on the A if the Yd/mast at 207 Yd was short of R-10s. When I was in high school I recall seeing a train of Lo-Vs on the BWay IRT even after then lie was supposed to be 100% R-21/22s. On the BMT I would occasionally encounter a train of D types on the West End Exp during the time when the Ds were assigned to the Brighton Exp and Sea Beach Exp exclusively and towards the end of their service life, a train of Multis ran on the Bway Bkln Lcl even though at the time Multis were the main equipment of the Myrtle.Chambers Exp.

On two or three occasions we rode on a Saturday morning prewar A from 42nd to 14th. No headlights on the lead motor, either.

Interesting. How long ago was this. I recall in late 1958/early 1959 R-10s on the weekend AA which would have meant R-1/9s available for the A if needed.

That does seem a bit late for R-1/9s on the weekend A. When I worked the A I would get an occasional R-1/9 train in the AM rush usually shortlining at Euclid.
