The 2019 Calendar!

Posted by Elkeeper on Mon Sep 24 11:16:31 2018

I just received my copy of the New york City Subways 2019 Calendar. January's photo is a rarely seen photo taken of just north of 143rd Street on the 3rd Ave el. However, it said that this structure was taken down in 1955. Wasn't it demolished in 1958?

The writer of the caption stated this, as he's a life long Bronx resident who rode the 3rd Ave el into Manhattan many times.

That structure is south of 149th St. I don't how long it remained up until demolition. I'll ask him when I see him soon.

Bill, there was a recent thread here about the 149th St station, after the Manhattan section closing. Something about trains relaying south and using the old service ramp between the upper and lower levels.

Bill: Service on the el south of 149th Street ended in May 1955. After that trains would run light south of 149th Street and reverse on the ramp south of 143rd Street station. This continued until July, 1956 when a double crossover was placed in service north of 149th Street station. The structure south of 149th Street was removed sometime after that.

I'm guessing he meant the Manhattan portion coming down in 1955.

So maybe elkeeper is right about 1958 ?

That should be when the center track of 149thSt station was decked over and the crossovers installed north of 149th. Correct ?

Bill: As you know the station at 149th Street consisted of three tracks and two island platforms.
Third Avenue El service south of 149th Street was discontinued on weekday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday in March 1952. Trains continued to run between Gun Hill Road and 149th Street by changing ends on the center track at 149th Street.
The center track at 149th Street was taken out of service on September 24, 1954 to convert the station into a single island platform with two outside tracks. This was done in anticipation of the permanent closure of the el south of 149th Street in May 1955.
The thru-expresses continued to run but they had to switch over to the local track north of 149th Street. In order to get back on the express track they used the ramp south of 143rd Street station. (This effectively closed the upper level at 143rd Street).
Passenger service south of 149th Street was permanently closed on May 12, 1955. The track arrangement north of 149th Street did not permit trains to reverse at that station without a triple reverse move so southbound trains discharged their passengers at 149th Street and ran light to the ramp south of 143rd Street where they reversed.
The double crossover north of 149th Street was placed in service in July 1965. Thereafter there was no need to retain the structure south of 149th Street. I do not know when demolition began.

So did I all the way from South Ferry to Gun Hill Rd. Though most of the 3 Av el in Manhattan was demolished starting in 1955, a short section between 34 St and 43 St remained since it carried power lines from a substation on 34 St to the Flushing Line. Once an alternate power station was found for the Flushing line, the remaining portion of the structure came down and I recall going to the place where the last pillar of the el was removed which was in early 1956 probably around January or February. About that time, my father and I took a ride on the Bx potion of the el from 149 St to Gun Hill Rd and I remember the train relaying S/O 149 St since the diamond Xover was not yet ready. That would mean that the structure in the vicinity of 143 St would have been up at least until the spring of 1956.
