Re: The 2019 Calendar!

That should be when the center track of 149thSt station was decked over and the crossovers installed north of 149th. Correct ?

Bill: As you know the station at 149th Street consisted of three tracks and two island platforms.
Third Avenue El service south of 149th Street was discontinued on weekday evenings and all day Saturday and Sunday in March 1952. Trains continued to run between Gun Hill Road and 149th Street by changing ends on the center track at 149th Street.
The center track at 149th Street was taken out of service on September 24, 1954 to convert the station into a single island platform with two outside tracks. This was done in anticipation of the permanent closure of the el south of 149th Street in May 1955.
The thru-expresses continued to run but they had to switch over to the local track north of 149th Street. In order to get back on the express track they used the ramp south of 143rd Street station. (This effectively closed the upper level at 143rd Street).
Passenger service south of 149th Street was permanently closed on May 12, 1955. The track arrangement north of 149th Street did not permit trains to reverse at that station without a triple reverse move so southbound trains discharged their passengers at 149th Street and ran light to the ramp south of 143rd Street where they reversed.
The double crossover north of 149th Street was placed in service in July 1965. Thereafter there was no need to retain the structure south of 149th Street. I do not know when demolition began.
