So did I all the way from South Ferry to Gun Hill Rd. Though most of the 3 Av el in Manhattan was demolished starting in 1955, a short section between 34 St and 43 St remained since it carried power lines from a substation on 34 St to the Flushing Line. Once an alternate power station was found for the Flushing line, the remaining portion of the structure came down and I recall going to the place where the last pillar of the el was removed which was in early 1956 probably around January or February. About that time, my father and I took a ride on the Bx potion of the el from 149 St to Gun Hill Rd and I remember the train relaying S/O 149 St since the diamond Xover was not yet ready. That would mean that the structure in the vicinity of 143 St would have been up at least until the spring of 1956.
