Train & Platform Conductors Instructed to Use New Strategies to Lessen Train Delays

Posted by heypaul on Sat Sep 22 23:05:10 2018

To discourage customers from sticking an arm between the closing doors to force the doors open, conductors are instructed to signal the train operator to move the train and drag the inconsiderate rider along the platform. After two or three grisly dismemberments and deaths, customers will get the message. Also platform conductors will be equipped with cattle prods and rabid dogs to further dissuade customers from ruining the Authority's on time stats.

They've circled back to blaming passengers again? lol!

Most delays that I've encountered are outside of rush hours when there are gaps in trains and holds by the "train dispatcher", track work, etc.

30 mins to go from Canal Street to Dekalb Ave over the Manhattan Bridge?

Southbound N via bridge and Q via tunnel arrive at Dekalb Ave at the same time and they both sit there for 5+ mins trying to decide who leaves first while I need to catch a train at Atlantic Terminal.

As for the actual blame, I've seen countdown clocks where it says the next C train is in 15 mins, and they expect people not to hold doors?

I don't think it's entirely unjust to blame the passengers. Even during rush hours when frequencies are higher, you have passengers who hold the doors. I remember seeing a train take more than 2 minutes to leave once just because people were holding the doors for their friends or family.

When I was working in the subways, the passengers were always holding up the trains with their nonsense.

in the late 60s, I regularly saw uniformed TA personnel held the doors on uptown #1s at Columbus Circle in PM rush. So much for blaming the pax.
Best way to cut back on door holding? tighter headways and better schedule adherence.

Ja, but maybe that was co-ordinated with the conductor. Surely the guy poking his head out the conductor window sees that, and can communicate with platform guy whether that's copacetic or no.

During rush hour, the train you 'miss' by not having your bud hold the door for you is followed by another in less than five minutes, and you don't have to run for it. Door holding does no meaningful good and surely does do harm, trains get held back a little at every stop which reduces the capacity of the whole line and increases crowding, which then makes the problem worse, etc.

yes, if the headways are close,"ya miss one, ya get the next" The problem is vastly different when the headways are long. Confiscate DLs of all SFMTA board members and appointive (mis)maanagement.

in the same vein, Cuomo and Blas should be required to use transit any time they are within NY State and NYC, respectively, unless they get the system sorted out. Yeah, Blas actually has no direct control of the subway, but he's such an arrogant putz that he oughtta be waiting in the urine-soaked heat (or cold) like everyone else.
