And there is one short stretch of the original platform left, on the western end inbound, according to the book too. Don't remember whether or not it was detached from the renovated platform and used for non revenue purposes - I though that's what I remember but I;m not certain.

Finley was bleeding money as the A's were never drawing well, even when they won their Championships from 1972-'74 (none of those teams came close to getting 1,000,000 in a season). He had the same problems in KC before that (why the A's went to Oakland in the first place in 1968) and it led to the A's being sold to I believe the still-current owners in 1980. That resulted in the infamous April 1979 game where only 547 fans showed up (all-time Division Era low and second only to the 413 fans who were at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 22, 1966 for a White Sox-Yankees game where Red Barber defied orders and ordered the cameras show the empty stands).

Grant wrecked the Mets to where they didn't recover until Doubleday and the Wilpons took over. He wasn't forced to do what he did the way Finley was.

I haven't read that book, but just from my personal observation, it looks to me like the original bit is at the eastern end of the westbound platform...

But the World's Fair was on the south side of Roosevelt, whereas Shea was and Citi Field is on the north side. There is, as I'm sure we all know, a big ramp that runs southbound, and is fully connected to the mezzanine, providing access to all 3 platforms.

So I'd think any structures that specifically direct passengers to the north side would have been built with Shea in mind. I remember the ramp, or, perhaps, pedestrian bridge that was there in the old days (pre-2009). I haven't had a good look to see if it still exists or was replaced when the new stadium opened.

Personally, not being much of a sports fan, I can say that I miss all those 1964 lampposts that were in Shea's parking lot right to the end.

Not comparing. Just mentioning that Kuhn used the "Best Interest in Baseball Clause" a few times and provided that as an example.

Thanks for the info. Previous post was "IIRC" from the book. I've ridden through Willets, but never stopped to check it out. I'll have to look around next time I ride out there.

Express Rider: The original station had three tracks and two outside platforms. The entrance was located on Willets Point Boulevard.
The coming of the 1939 World’s Fair lead to construction of what is essentially a new station constructed to the west of the old one. This is the station that is in use today.
What remains of the old station is this. The mezzanine
at Willets Point Boulevard is still intact and visible from the street. All the stairways have been removed. About 200 feet (+/-) of the original Manhattan-bound platform remains. It is connected to the current Manhattan bound platform at its east end but is separated by a gate. A much shorter section of the original Flushing bound platform was retained as a service platform. It was located east of the current Flushing bound platform but not connected to it.
I do not know if it is still there.

Since you mentioned the short section of the eastbound (RR northbound) platform I recall seeing it prior to the 1964 World’s Fair, but if my memory serves me correctly it was removed by the time of the fair or shortly thereafter.

Grant didn't care that the Mets were the laughingstock of the league as long as they made a profit.

Forced the way Finley was?
They were in the ALCS the year before he tried selling guys away.
Finley was a stubborn as that mule he used as a mascot. He didn't want to get into competition with other clubs vying for free agents.
I know all about their poor attendance but Finley was a genuine cheapskate.

Finley was a cheapskate but he simply didn't have the money to compete, especially once free agency started.

I don't know how much he had in his bank account but he also knew those guys weren't going to sign with him anyway.
