Finley was bleeding money as the A's were never drawing well, even when they won their Championships from 1972-'74 (none of those teams came close to getting 1,000,000 in a season). He had the same problems in KC before that (why the A's went to Oakland in the first place in 1968) and it led to the A's being sold to I believe the still-current owners in 1980. That resulted in the infamous April 1979 game where only 547 fans showed up (all-time Division Era low and second only to the 413 fans who were at Yankee Stadium on Sept. 22, 1966 for a White Sox-Yankees game where Red Barber defied orders and ordered the cameras show the empty stands).

Grant wrecked the Mets to where they didn't recover until Doubleday and the Wilpons took over. He wasn't forced to do what he did the way Finley was.
