It could be a removable bridge similar to Track 4 of the 42st shuttle.

True, but if it’s as complicated to move as the one on the shuttle, it wouldn't be much good in an emergency if there were a blockage on 6 Ave, or if Js had to be shortlined there in the event of a blockage at Fulton or Broad.

It was restored in 2003 as part of the restoration of service following 9-11. It was extended westward to connect with the tunnels going to and from Grove St via a Y type connection, allowing Exchange Place to be used as a temporary terminal for trains from Newark and Hoboken. It's still used occasionally for GO's as a long double crossover allowing single tracking in the area.

Elkeeper: Chambers Street station and the Municipal Building where built in part over the remains of the south branch of Collect Pond. The building contractor described the soil as soft peat. It was necessary to sink the foundations for the Municipal Building down to 130 feet to find bedrock. This may be a contributing factor to the dank and damp atmosphere at Chambers Street.

That is not the case. They are just building a staircase above the closed island platform with other stairs that lead down to either platform, because the current stairs will be replaced with elevators.

That’s good. Unfortunately, the same will not be able to be done at Chambers St in the event the platforms are extended. About the only thing the track could be used for in that case is possible laying up a work train.

I was going to mention the same thing. It’s possible that Collect Pond was not able to be completely drained and there may even be an underground spring in the area.

I read a few articles about Collect Pond, but saw nothing about its water sources drying up. If water from there is oozing into Chambers St, that will make waterproofing that station a lot more difficult!

That was my point. As Jeff Goldblum explained in Jurassic Park (yes, obviously that was fiction), nature's a hard thing to kill.

I believe that the parking lot on Centre Street adjacent to the courthouses is atop of it. I'm sure it was bigger than that, and it's probably still oozing and seeping.

The pond was obviously not drained. It's sources and discharge were culverted and the pond was filled in. That water is obviously still there, underground.

Canal Street's namesake is still under there.

That water is obviously still there, underground.

???

200 years ago, water would have trickled into the pond from surface runoff, and/or seeped into it underground.

Now that all surface water in lower Manhattan flows into the storm sewer system, it is not at all clear to me that any underground pool of water would still exist.

The Chambers Street Station leaks may just be due to deterioration of waterproofing layers above rather than any seepage from a remaining underground pool.

Chambers St was built to Triborough Subway standards which had higher ceilings than the Dual Contracts specs.

Another possibility is that they intend to eliminate the relay tracks. Note this open ended statement in the announcement: "parts of the mezzanine and existing station facilities will need to be removed or reconfigured."

They are just building a staircase to an intermediate level above the closed island platform with other stairs that lead down to either platform (going at least one train height above the relay tracks, hence a "bridge") because the current stairs will be replaced with elevators.

As I alluded to in another post, should the MTA during the reconstruction, choose to lengthen the station to accommodate 600 ft trains, the relay tk would be of little use since the bumping block is right at the east (north) wall of the IRT west side subway preventing it from being extended to hold longer trains.
