Elkeeper: Chambers Street station and the Municipal Building where built in part over the remains of the south branch of Collect Pond. The building contractor described the soil as soft peat. It was necessary to sink the foundations for the Municipal Building down to 130 feet to find bedrock. This may be a contributing factor to the dank and damp atmosphere at Chambers Street.
