Thought the Lackawanna and NEC power systems were incomparable at that time (1977), until NJT rehabbed the M&E line back in the late 90s...

This day will live in infamy in Chicago. For it was on this date in 1950 that Green Hornet 7078 split a switch at 62nd Place and State St. and slammed into a gasoline truck heading in the opposite direction. The resulting inferno torched the streetcar and 33 people were killed. Heavy rains that day caused flooding of an underpass just south of 63rd St., just to the north of where the onramps to the Skyway are now. All streetcars used a turnaround loop at 62nd Place to turn around and head north. Crews had nearly finished pumping out the water from the underpass by the time 7078 approached and supposedly the motorman, who perished in the collision, was told he'd be going straight on through and either didn't see or ignored the flagman a block north of the turnaround. The switch to 62nd Place had been plugged in the open position instead of being closed after each car moved to the loop. The motorman was unaware of this and was traveling at an estimated 35 mph when 7078 went through the open switch. Although the conductor managed to release the rear doors after the car derailed, the crush of people was so great that the doors were forced shut after a handful of people managed to escape through them. There was no emergency release feature at the rear doors, but there was a release at the center doors and one quick-thinking 14-year-old girl pulled the release and was able to escape with just a broken finger.

Steve: Could you e-mail this to me and include what line it was running on? I would like to include it in the Almanac.

Lou: That is correct. When the Arrow III's arrived they could not run on the DL&W electric system. They were instead placed in service on the Northeast Corridor Line. This permitted the Arrow I cars to be withdrawn for re-building. The upgrading of the M& E lines was finished by Labor Day, 1984 at which time the Arrow III began service there.

If I remember correctly, the situation involving the Manhattan Bridge led to eventually the (D) having to run to Essex, go onto the Willy B for about 20 feet or so and then have the trains reverse direction to head to the Nassau line and Montague to continue to Brooklyn for much of the rest of 1982 and '83 before going to more of the split setup that has been common when the Manny B has been out for extended periods since then.

That is correct. Too bad they didn't connect Chrystie St to go south on Nassau St, as well!

How would that have happened?

Would they have had such trains bypass the Bowery station and join the line south of there?

I'm assuming that the Christie-Nassau connector would have run under the present Bowery station and joined the J/Z tracks, using the 2 center tracks, just north of Canal St.

Actually, the way the Chrystie tks go, they would have to pass over the Bowery station. I looked at Google maps and it looks like, the tracks would have to slightly “cuphandle” off the Chrystie - Manny B tks and go over the Bowery station around where the mezzanine is, follow the curve west of the station and ramp down to the middle tks.
