[PHOTOS] CTA "Spam Cans" On the P & W |
|
Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu May 24 15:55:02 2018 I don't have a timetable from the late 80's, but 1974 will do Starting out at the northern terminus of Norristown. Not all CTA 6000's received the SEPTA repaint, but retained their "windy city" colors. (October 6, 1988) In SEPTA paint at King Manor (September 27, 1989) First station south of Norristown, Bridgeport. Now the line is doubled tracked to 69th St.(October 6, 1988) Watch that gap at Gulph Mills. (October 6, 1988) Bryn Mawr station. (August 8, 1991) Unknown location. This is probably out on the line near Conshohocken Rd. (June 4, 1990) I think this is Gulph Mills looking toward Norristown. (September 1990) Back where we started from, Norristown. (October 8, 1988) |

I was surprised that they were in crappier condition than the Strafford cars since they were a couple decades newer. Subsequently a Chicagoan told me that they were removed from the to-be-scrapped line and sent to SEPTA. |

Those were the early 6000s with the straight doors. They were built with all-new components while the ones whose doors matched the rest of the side contour were built from recycled Green Hornet parts. |

Additionally, the headlights were below the Motorman's cab and the "Foamer" window. The destination sign was where the headlight is in the pictures. The modification was done by CTA in the early 1960s, I believe, pre SEPTA.The pair that CTA recently took back from Fox River has the original configuration... |

Back in 2001 when I visited IRM with Chicagomotorman, chuchubob, and someone else whose name I've forgotten, we also visited Fox River. Not nearly as much equipment as IRM but they had some neat pieces. By now I'm sure they have much more. |

Not only CTA cars, but single unit "Almond Joys" were sent to the P&W IIRC because of failing Straffords and Bullet cars. |

The neat thing about the Almond Joys was it was a two-man car, only the center door opened, and the conductor had a fare box strapped to a center pole. Also, the familiar whooping take off sound the Almond Joys had on the MFSE,did not happen on the single car NHSL cars. Also, IRC, they were very slow accelerating. |

Bill: Seven two car sets of CTA 6000 series cars were placed in service on the Norristown beginning sometime in the late 1980's (date needed). They were joined by five Market- Frankford cars in 1990. The ex-CTA cars were numbered 476-489. The Market-Frankford cars although retroactively referred to as M-3's actually belong to PTC Class A-49. This meant that they were double ended single units. The car numbers were 601, 602, 605, 609 and 619. 601 was named "Columbia" and 605 was named "Enterprise". They remained in service until 1994 when enough n-5's had arrived to cover the service. From what I have seen of photos of the original 6000s, there was a second group of the pre Green Hornet cars that came from the factory with the headlight above the end door. The originals are easy to spot since the headlight assembly is built into the front bulkhead rather than being added on as is the case with the converted ones. Also for some strange reason, the Green Hornets also had the “added on” headlight assemblies even though the cars acme factory equipped that way. The pair at Fox River is the 6101/6102 unit which was running in regular passenger service as late as 1989 and which I had the good fortune to operate when I was there that year thanks to the kindness of a CTA supt who shall remain nameless. |

The Spamcans were also 2 man cars and a “C/R” (probably either a light duty or extra M/M) used a fare box similarly attached. SEPTA actually wanted some of the CTA singles which were set up for OPTO for use on Skokie Swift, but the CTA was unwilling to give them up. |
