Best Way To Hunt RFWs?

Posted by Nilet on Thu Mar 15 21:24:47 2018

So does anyone have advice for the best way to hunt down the rare remaining RFWs?

In particular...

Is there a good way to find a RFW on the 7 express rather than rely on blind luck? Is there any rhyme or reason to when the R62s get sent out or whether they'll be sent out on any given day? (Per a source of mine; there are 4 sets assigned to Corona but only one of them was on the road during the Wednesday PM rush. No idea where it was or whether it had a Queens-facing RFW since I only rode from Hudson Yards to 5th Avenue and all I saw were R188s.)

Is DJ Hammers still around? That guy seems to know where everything is all the time and may potentially be clairvoyant.

Also, is there any strategy to hunt down the last train (or several trains?) of M2s other than wait at Grand Central and peek at every outbound departure on the New Haven line? Do those trains run outside of rush hour? Would the first car invariably be open when departing Grand Central (I'm inclined to doubt that they'd close cars on a peak train.) Waiting at 125th isn't a good strategy since (a) it might skip 125th and (b) I likely wouldn't have time to buy a ticket between spotting it and it arriving so unless I know exactly where it's going in advance I'd be stuck paying on-board fare. And if there *is* a way to know in advance where it'll be, I'd love to catch it on an inbound AM train instead.

Try the A train.

Supposedly the 5:18 to Harrison uses M2 regularly. There's also some Hudson/Harlem line runs that use M3s pretty regularly.

As for the 62A 7 trains, try looking for them during the AM Rush as most lines require more trainsets for the AM Rush vs the PM Rush.

OK, I'll check. Thanks. Is there an AM run that also uses them regularly?

I've seen an express to White Plains (first stop Scarsdale) that's almost always M3s but I'm making a priority of the rarest and likely shortest-lived.

That's true, but in my experience the 7 is more likely to have Queens-facing RFWs than Manhattan-facing so it evens out. (Also I already got a RFW video of the inbound 7 express).

Thanks for your help.

:(

The R32s will be around through 2019 apparently, so there'll be RFWs on the A, C, J, and Z. The R42s on the M shuttle will be trapped there through April. The M3s on LIRR and MNRR will likely be around for a little while. The M2s on the New Haven line seem like supplementary equipment at best so I don't know how long they have left. The R62s on the 7 still have the occasional RFW, but they'll be gone when CBTC is finished which may be only a few months.

By 2020, the nearest RFW will probably be the Market-Frankford line. :(

Why do you think that is?

Cuts and adds in the yard?

I think it's because of the position of the conductor's cab, combined with an (apparent) policy that the conductor always gets a full cab, but no other full cabs are allowed to be in the middle of the train.

The 7 uses 11-car trains. R62s come in single units and 5-car sets. Sets can have full cabs, but single units don't. The conductor is always in the 5th car from the Manhattan end, meaning the Manhattan end is always a 5-car set— which may well have a full cab at both ends. Meanwhile, the rest of the train may be a single car and then another five-car set but it may also be six single cars, which virtually guarantees a RFW on that end.

Over the past two months, I've seen nine trains of R62s on the 7, of which five had only a Queens-facing RFW, one had only a Manhattan-facing RFW, two had no RFW at all, and one had a double-ended RFW.

by having the 5-car family on the south end/Manhattan-bound end, it means that you can't gap when doing yard moves in Corona Yard.

If you have the single car units on the south end, it would be hard to cut and add those units without a gap in the yard.

Assuming you have a smartphone, the e-ticket app would significantly cut down on the time necessary to buy an appropriate ticket. The platform signs at 125th list all stops, right?

There are now two consists of R62As that run on the 7, mainly during the AM and PM rush hours only. Get your rides/photos/videos of them now - unless plans change they’ll be off the line by the end of the month.

As the R179s come in, R32/42 equipment will be displaced from the J to other lines. This is already happening now by the way.

Hope this helps!

Just two R62As? I heard four last week. Do they still have RFWs? Will they still (potentially) have RFWs for any time after they get transferred to the 6?

OK, thanks. I already knew about that (and I already have a complete RFW video of the Z train, plus a bonus RFW video express Broadway Junction - Marcy) so I'm less concerned about that.

Yep. Thanks.

How do you get all your information anyway? Are you actually clairvoyant?

Why can’t you get the ticket in advance anyhow? Aren’t they good for a year so that you can use it anytime within that period?

Clairvoyant enough to know that you’re currently in the front of an R62A 7 express taking video :D

Further RFW Hunting

Posted by Nilet on Wed Apr 11 12:54:05 2018, in response to Best Way To Hunt RFWs?, posted by Nilet on Thu Mar 15 21:24:47 2018.

Are the R62s gone from the 7? I already got RFW videos, but I'm never one to refuse a chance to obsessively re-take a RFW video just in case the first one wasn't perfect.

When the M reopens in May, will the J/Z be express again until the L shutdown? If so, would I still have a reasonable chance of catching an R32 or an R42 on the Z in the morning? (I'm not sure of the rate of R179 arrivals, but I spotted a set of R32s at Grand Street yesterday, on its way off the J line.)

This year - no. The M-9's aren't even on the N.A. continent yet and they'll need 160 in service to do it..
