When the 5 becomes a 4

Posted by jabrams on Fri Mar 16 16:04:41 2018

I got on a Flatbush Ave, 5 the other day. The FIND system did not have any upcoming stations lit from Franklin Ave. to Flatbush. At Franklin it is announced that the last stop would be Utica Ave. If that was planned in advance, could the FIND system have been turned off (these cars are designed for 2 or 5 only). Could the internal "Next station is" and the outside signs be changed to #4?

None of the IRT MNTTs have a FIND system, just s strip map of the line they are assigned to although some of the cars have had an additional line added t assist in interlining.

The FIND system is only on the 160 and 179.

It’s not going to be changed to a 4 because it’s a 5 destined for Utica. They can’t change the line designator on a train mid-trip and the only other option is to sign it as a 4 all the way from Dyre Ave, and surley that’s not confusing in the least bit.

Ok, It is only a strip map, but why weren't the stations from Franklin to Flatbus lit up?

The automated announcements and the scroll in the ceiling of the cars will say its a Crown Heights bound 5 train. The 143s on the J have a similar situation, they run on the J with L line strip maps.

Most likely it was planned in advance as some 5 runs go to Utica due to Flatbush terminal being at capacity.

Reminds of many years ago when I rode an 142 on the 2 with 4 line strip maps, that was pretty cool, but it would have been better if it was 142A though.

Because it wasn't going to Flatbush. Are you sure that the outside sign didn't say "Crown Hts-Utica Av" all along? A few 5 trains are actually scheduled to go to Utica Ave., there is a note in the timetable saying so.

They can’t change the line designator on a train mid-trip

Theoretically, they could. It's current policy not to do that but MTA policies change with each generation of suits.

That is probably what it was. The train was pulling into the station as I was coming down the stairs. I ended up in the last car, but did see a 5 on the outside sign and the next station display, but it could have been signed for Utica.

In the AM rush there are a few selected 2s that go the N/Lts and a few selected 5s that go to either Utica or N/Lts to lay up. These trains are needed in the Bx but are not needed for N/B service from Flatbush so they go directly to the E/Pky branch to lay up. In the event that a Flatbush train goes bad, the N/Lts and Utica layups are supposed to be sent to Flatbush to replace the B/O train.

Decades ago the TA could sign its trains in a number of ways, and still be consistent with the published subway maps and printed signage within the subway stations.

For example a Bronx originated #5 train headed toward downtown Manhattan and/or Brooklyn could be signed as Dyre Avenue to Bowling Green, Utica Avenue, Flatbush Avenue, or New Lots Avenue - all within the rush hour periods. No one would think that there is something wrong with that particular train.

May, how the times have changed.

Mike

I guess with the loss of destination signs on the bulkhead of the train, I can understand confusion when all you see is the route and won’t know where the train is going until you see the side sign. And yes, I do know about countdown clocks but when one is more focused on their electronic devices than focusing on necessary details to move about safely, you’ll understand from there. Common people just see a train, they get on without seeing what line, where’s it going etc. It happens on the Hudson Tubes all the time. Bright side destination signs with the destination and you come ask is this the train to such and such? Read the sign, focus, pay attention. STAY OFF YOUR DAMN PHONE! It’s not hard at all. Not like how it used to be.
