Decades ago the TA could sign its trains in a number of ways, and still be consistent with the published subway maps and printed signage within the subway stations.

For example a Bronx originated #5 train headed toward downtown Manhattan and/or Brooklyn could be signed as Dyre Avenue to Bowling Green, Utica Avenue, Flatbush Avenue, or New Lots Avenue - all within the rush hour periods. No one would think that there is something wrong with that particular train.

May, how the times have changed.
