As an irony and in full circle of sorts, R-10 car #2961 was also in the consist of the last known and recorded regularly scheduled run of the fleet itself (all green-painted units) on Friday, September 8, 1989.

n/3209-3157-2961-3159-3181-3169-3008-3168/s

Thus, #2961 lasted four years extending its life in regular service (instead of the planned five) as an overhauled car. And so it goes...

William: I always liked the "Pullman Green" paint scheme on the R-10's. It gave them a classy look. It didn't go so well with the R-33 though.

I remember riding an all green GG local from Woodhaven Blvd to Northern Blvd back in the late 80s. They looked great. But knowing that they were on borrowed time, retrofitting them with A/C probably wasn't even considered.

But they were retrofitted with PA systems, which were awkward to use. The conductor, after closing the doors, came back into the car, then went into the cab to make the announcement, then went back between cars to open the doors at the next stop. So the announcements could only be made while the train was moving between stops.

I will never forget how fast the R10s were when they were first GOH'd. The interiors were brighter and the riding quality was smooth (for an R10).

By 1987 they still had the brightness and some of the speed but those horrible flat wheels made them unbearable.

I liked that scheme myself and was looking forward to seeing it on the rest of the SMEE fleet including the cars that eventually became the redbirds. Even the modified 2 tone turquoise and cream would have been nice. I remember one day when I was a trainmaster meeting David Gunn and asking him whey he had the R-10s painted green. He replied it was because it was their original color. I had the courage to remind him that it wasn’t their original color and that the original color was 2 tone grey with red-orange stripes. He merely responded that since it was the original color of the R-1/9s it was still appropriate.

It did not help matters with the GOH R-10's when they had the composition brake shoes put on them, instead of keeping their original cast iron ones, plus how they were braking to slow down or stop. The MDBF was no better either, averaging about 3000 miles per breakdown (as I seem to recall reading).

No, the R-10's PA mikes and box were inside the motorman's (T/O) operating cab. Only R-4 #484 and #744 had the mikes about the trigger boxes. The R-10's PA systems were put in circa 1974.

I had no problem with the green paint scheme on the R-10's overall, along with their updated roll signs. It did give a much brighter look inside, with the fluorescent lights now going full blast as being that bright.

Their NYAB rotary screw compressor was unusual to hear at first, not their original WABCO A-1 one that I loved listening to. The flat wheels and braking were basically their downfall, with them getting the composition shoes put in instead keeping their cast iron ones.

And now, the full list of R-10's that given the "treatment" December 1984-February 1986:

2951, 2955, 2956, 2957, 2958, 2959, 2960, 2961, 2962, 2966, 2967(*), 2968, 2969, 2971, 2973, 2974, 3001, 3003, 3005(*), 3008, 3011, 3013, 3016, 3018, 3021, 3022, 3023, 3025, 3026, 3027, 3029, 3030, 3031, 3033, 3035(*), 3036, 3037, 3038, 3040(*), 3043, 3044, 3045, 3047, 3048, 3101, 3107, 3110, 3114, 3116(*), 3117, 3118, 3121, 3123, 3125, 3126, 3128, 3130, 3133, 3136, 3137, 3138, 3139, 3141, 3142, 3143, 3144, 3145, 3146, 3149, 3150(*), 3153, 3154, 3157, 3158, 3159, 3161, 3164(*), 3166, 3168, 3169, 3170, 3173, 3176, 3177, 3181, 3182, 3184, 3185, 3186, 3187, 3191, 3193, 3194, 3197, 3198, 3199, 3201(*), 3203, 3204, 3205(*), 3206, 3208(*), 3209, 3212, 3215, 3216, 3219, 3220, 3221 and 3224.

(*) = Car that had its side number plates lowered from the top of the roofline a few inches down.

Cars 3037 and 3169 were the last R-10's as observed to come out of being overhauled from the 207th Street Shop. Car #3184 is the museum car taken from that group.

The W.H. R-10's that NYC Transit did not choose to be in this overhaul program were:

2965, 3009, 3010, 3039, 3046, 3152, 3188, 3190, 3210 and 3223. 3189 (now a museum car stored at 207th Street Yard) had already been taken out of service earlier, and became the RCI Yard Office/School Car at Pitkin Yard.

Yeah, the original trucks were getting problems in the cracks, and they had those rubber inserts that supposed have given the R-10's a much quieter ride.

Obviously, that did not work, plus there was this one incident back in February 1949 on an "A" train run that them with uneven braking valve problems were not consistent and reliable.

So, the R-10's were sidelined but temporarily, and that meant with some discussion between the B.O.T. and A.C.F. at the factory for a solution. So, the answer was that they changed the trucks with the very noisy, heavier ones that would be more familiar with them through most of their service life. The replacement ones were labeled with an "R" each after their number.

The green paint scheme may have not been the right choice of color, perhaps the red as the other choice, which would have been applied to the IRT SMEEs. That was the decision by the Kiley/Gunn TA administration back then, so there you go...

The rotary screw compressor did not do well at NYCT. The R68's were delivered with these and were soon replaced. How well did the green R10's do with them?

The R-11s also had mikes above the trigger boxes like 484 and 744. When 484 and 744 were retrofitted, they were supposed to be kept together at the C/R operating position of the trains they were on so PA operation could be tested, but I never saw them operating that way probably because by the time I started riding the system, the B of T opted for in cab door operation and the new cars would eventually have PA mikes in the cars.

I remember the first time I rode an R-10 when I was a bout 4 or 5 and even though I was young and unfamiliar with IND rolling stock, I do remember that the r-010s seemed to have a bit of a rattle to them that the older cars didn’t have. I was told that when the SMEE brake system was first introduced on the R-10s, they did not have an electric emergency feature, so that if a C/R emergency cord was pulled, towards the rear of the train, the brake pipe pressure would fall there first often causing a pull apart. WABCO went back to the drawing board and developed the emergency magnet valves that were used on all SMEE equipment ever since.

Hi Larry...

Thanks for the Almanac, as always. I hate to give you, or anyone a hard time- but I must respectfully point out an error in the 2004 entry.

In fact, it was not the first time that service was operated on all 4 Manny B tracks "in nearly a decade". The last time there was full bridge service was in the autumn of 1990... when the TA talked a reluctant NYC DOT into allowing it...then, a structural element ton the bridge shifted, and the H tracks were closed until 2001...But when the H tracks reopened- the IND (B chain, I think...) closed until 2/22/04.
