You've given me an idea - extend the (A) under the Harlem River, then along the Put to Yonkers!

Here's one at Joe Korman's site, at Ardsley:

There's a lot of really good info on wikipedia.
It says that the first diesel passenger train was run on that line in 1929.

Fred

You can clearly see that there is space for a second track. Hell, it looks like there once was one even.

The line itself was single track (it never really caught on throughout its long history) but had numerous "passing sidings" to allow scheduled trains to meet, just like the Franklin Shuttle does at Botanical. And like the Franklin, you can DO a single track as long as there's passing space at strategic spots, based on schedule. The PUT was still running when I was a kid, and by the time I was old enough to climb into an ALCO, it was strictly a freighter, I did get several cab rides with a friend's dad on that line up to wherever the car plant was - decent sized loads of lading back and forth on the line. No geese though in my days.

A PIECE of it should still be there if you get off at Marble Hill or 225 on the 1 train and head EAST from there until the "overpass" on 225. Below is the PUT ... or at least where it was if THOSE tracks got ripped up too. :(

But the line was mostly single track throughout its history. Never got much ridership, today would likely be no different for where it goes.

Just as you said, there are no noticeable parts remaining. I know the Caryl ave. station is now a parking lot...As is a section in between New Main and School St. You can still find the upper and lower buildings of the Park Hill elevator...the lower house being right off the Yonkers ROW. You can get there by turning off south Broadway onto Undercliff St...Just before Undercliff makes a hard right, you can see what remains of the ROW.

I lived in Yonkers for 23 years...I moved away about 20 years ago, and I'm always looking for old photos, which are VERY hard to come by. There was a web page once...but that seems to be no longer in operation. My mom always told me about how she used to "take the subway" from Yonkers. I used to think she was crazy until I learned of the Yonkers branch!

When I was a kid, there was still a trolley from Getty Square that got you near 242 IRT but not quite there. Had to take a bus from above city line. Spent my early childhood in Riverdale before it got built up, so I know Yankahs pretty well. Even Nepperhan. :)

As it was mentiond in the book, "Commuter Trains to Grand Central", the Putnam was a poor sister to the Harlem and Hudson Lines. Even today, the Put would be useless unless it went somewhere where rail service is really needed. IMHO, the Put could be used for the proposed rail service on the hopefully built Tappan Zee Bridge and connect to the Port Jervis line in Suffern and the Pascack Valley Line in Spring Valley. That way, no tying up the Hudson and Harlem lines but this new "Put" needs GCT access.

Ye, I know the MOO difference.... but Finkel's NYWB walk-thru is still emmy-worthy.

I've borrowed a few books from the Westchester Libraries about the Put Division.... so there's PROFF out there.

I say use the Put ROW in The Bronx in one of the following different ways:
Option 1. Extend the A from 207st down Broadway to a new station on 215st, then turn east on 216th where it would emerge to a new bridge over the Harlem River to the Old Put's turnoff in The Bronx. Follow the Put ROW to Van Cortlandt Park. From there leave the ROW and have the train viaduct run over the Major Deegan EXP to Jerome Av and 233rd St. (extend the "4" one stop to this location for transfer. There would be no NIMBYs since the extension would between Van Cort.Park and Woodlawn Cemetery). From there let the A drop to a subway and have stops under MNR Woodlawn Station and another at White Plains Rd under the "2/5" el. Continue along 233rd placing stations where needed until the Dyre Ave terminal of the "5" train.

Option 2. NIMBYkiller has a well thought out and inexpensive idea for a commuter "belt" line that he posted on wiredny.com's forums. Using my above Bronx part of the plan have trains built to commuter standards but operating under NYCT fares and auspices. South on The Put let it continue along the Hudson Line, thru Oak Point Yard to a new connection to the Hell Gate Bridge Freight Line (not Amtrak's). Continue along the Connecting RR and then to the the Bay Ridge Line's terminus on the NY Bay. If the Cross-Harbor Freight Tunnel is ever built continue it to NJ. (or SI North Shore line if they build it to St George) If the cars are Metro-North standard they would be allowed on freight lines. Build stations where passengers can transfer to other lines and at other needed places. Such a belt line (the "O train") would interconnect to transfers to almost every subway line in Bklyn, Queens and he Bronx at their outer limits and provide a much needed service.
