The line itself was single track (it never really caught on throughout its long history) but had numerous "passing sidings" to allow scheduled trains to meet, just like the Franklin Shuttle does at Botanical. And like the Franklin, you can DO a single track as long as there's passing space at strategic spots, based on schedule. The PUT was still running when I was a kid, and by the time I was old enough to climb into an ALCO, it was strictly a freighter, I did get several cab rides with a friend's dad on that line up to wherever the car plant was - decent sized loads of lading back and forth on the line. No geese though in my days.A PIECE of it should still be there if you get off at Marble Hill or 225 on the 1 train and head EAST from there until the "overpass" on 225. Below is the PUT ... or at least where it was if THOSE tracks got ripped up too. :( But the line was mostly single track throughout its history. Never got much ridership, today would likely be no different for where it goes. |
