Will this surcharge be for Amtrak and Acela fares that pass thru the area too? That would be the fairest method.

It clearly says an NJT surcharge.
This helps NJ with its share of the load.

AMTK has its own share to cover and may do it in many ways.

What's "fair" about it?

Time to bring back the PRR.

Amtrak and Acela already cost way more than NJT.

So inbound trains will cost more than the corresponding outbound trains? That's kind of pointless, since almost all riders make round trips. The obvious comparison is with tolls for cars and other vehicles being charged only inbound, but that was to reduce toll booth delays. I guess it symbolically sends a message that entering the city has costs. But the actual costs of the tunnel would be the same either way.

They also are way out of whack inflation-wise with the fares that used to be charged 49 years ago. The NYP-WAS fare on the original Metroliner was $12.75 in 1969, which works out to $87.12 in 2017 dollars.

complete w/bankruptcy, deferred maintenance and aanti-passenger attitudes??? Were you actually alive in that era? I was, and despite my contempt for much of Amtrak, and other operator's behaviors, PRR was disgusting. And so was NYC. Finding cigarette butts in the ash tray of your roomette as you depart GCT is not my vision of a great RR.

True. Amtrak charges as much as they can get away with until it adversely affects ridership, because despite the high fares, Amtrak carries a goodly number of passengers in the NRC who subsidises the money losing routes.

I had the experience of trying to book sleeping accommodations to Chicago on PRR. IIRC, called Pennsylvania 6-2000.

Net only was the agent difficult in answering my questions bur he finally said "Why don't you take the bus?" and hung up.

Often took the train between Trenton and Penn when I was at Ft. Dix. More than one conductor gave me (and others) a hard time getting our military fare if we weren't in uniform. It wasn't the era when you wore military clothing off-duty if you didn't have to.

Maybe the high fares give the NEC a sense of being an elite service. :-)

Ugh - this means that NJT will have to go back to one way tickets being the direction on the ticket, like the ORT (RTX) tickets. This is dumb. Fortunately their ten trip tickets are useless (no discount), because those are going to be even more dumb.

They should half the cost and charge it bidirectionally.

I am sure it simply means 90 cents each way.

The sum total of this surcharge will cover the portable Johnny's for the construction workers, and maybe their coffee, while the higher fare wiil divert more riders to buses to PABT and to PATH.

"On the other side of the river, New York riders will not get a surcharge"

So what does that mean if not rides from NY to NJ? Maybe LIRR riders using the East River tunnels? Did they sustain the same kind of damage the Hudson River tunnels did?

I doubt it. I think it's a per-trip surcharge for both inbound and outbound trains.

The phrasing was a little awkward, but I think what they were trying to say was, essentially, "New York and New Jersey each have to pay 25% of the construction costs. New Jersey has decided to fund their portion with a surcharge on NJT tickets to and from Penn Station, while New York has decided to fund their portion by other means."

And how did that work out for them?

Given that the Penn Central went bankrupt, maybe you shouldn't try to argue that their fares were entirely reasonable.

$4 more. That is not a surcharge., anymore so than Zone 1 on LIRR is not a surcharge as compared to Zone 3.

LION re-listened to the video. Besides the fact that reporters don't know shit I heard "Riders to Manhattan" will pay the surcharge "per trip" : Pay it in, Pay it out.

Those guys on the other side of the river (I suppose they meant LIRR) well they do not pay the surcharge. And neither will AMTK.

Go to PATH.... I think not. PATH is crowded to overflowing already, I wqas thinking of switching to NJT next time I come to Newark.
