[PHOTOS] Myrtle Ave "el" Comes Down (Myrtle & Flatbush)

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Thu Nov 9 16:14:56 2017

The last section of Brooklyn's famed "el" succumbed to acetylene torches in December 1970, the date of these photos. The greatest hurdle was the arched bridge over Flatbush Ave. To remove this, Flatbush Ave. was closed and traffic diverted. Twin cranes were used to lower the last section of steel as shown in the following photos:
Looking south on Myrtle Ave toward Jay St.

A steel structure that hosted all types of wooden "el" cars and Q-Types surrenders to the scrappers torch

Twin cranes hold the massive steel structure while workmen's torches separate the structure from the steel pillars. Now the cranes in tandem will slowly lower the structure to the street so it can be cut up.

The structure is now resting on the street. Although the this span was lowered very slowly, when it touched the street, the ground shook. That's a lot of tonnage there.

Workmen cut up the billboard that once was attached to the structure.

With the bilboard now off the structure, the structure will now be laid flat so the torch cutting can begin.

Ironically, Flatbush Ave had once been considered as the Myrtle Ave el terminal, before Unification. When I used to ride that el, that bridge span over Flatbush Ave always fascinated me!

But, there should have been one at Bridge-Jay Sts. A ticket type transfer, like the Franklin Shuttle/IND Fulton subway transfer. Instead, they had that idiotic transfer for passengers paying at Broadway-Nassau.

We did have the AM/PM paper transfer on the B54 bus replacement to get on the A or the F. No one ever asked us whether we were going to Park Row (Bway-Nassau) or not - ever. We even used it to head downtown on the B54, do errands/shopping and used the paper transfer to come back on the A to the GG. As long it was done in the same time period AM or PM. Every 50 cents counted when we were poor Pratt art students!

I think I used the ticket from Bway-Nassau to get to the B54 once just to do it. It was only available from one booth. The B54 driver looked at the ticket like it he'd never seen it before.

When I first started riding the Myrtle el in the late 1950s, there was a free paper transfer at Bridge/Jay St in both directions unrestricted. Over the years the various restrictions with which most of us are familiar, were put on the transfer. As for the transfer from/to Myrtle at the old 4 Ave line Myrtle (Gold St) station, as part of the dual contracts, it was planned to build a station on the el at Flatbush and a convenient connection to the subway station. That combined with the eventual rebuilding of the Fulton el for steel cars and routing into the subway at Ashland Pl would have achieved the ultimate removal of rapid transit tracks from the Bkln Br which did occur but not the way it was originally proposed.

Imagine how big the system would be if money was spent expanding lines, rather than duplicating them. Especially Fulton since a good portion of it was already upgraded.

The Fulton Street el could never have been modified to have the bi-directional capacity of the current Fulton Street subway.

The Jamaica el was never so converted because it never needed the capacity of a 4 track IND subway with 10 car trains. There is only a one hour interval in each direction of 5 minute intervals. Maybe someday that will be 90 minutes. If ever they extend any subway line to Queens Village, it would be the Hillside subway.

The transfers at Jay Street have a long and at times confusing history. This might help to explain some of it.

Tuscarora Dispatch No 15

Bus and Subway Transfers at Jay Street and High Street

The operation of BMT el trains across the Brooklyn Bridge came to an end on March 5, 1944 and the remaining el lines were cut back to a new terminal called Bridge-Jay Streets. Transfers were issued to and from the BMT trolley cars running across the bridge to Park Row.

Trolley cars ceased operating across the bridge on March 6, 1950 . A transfer was established for surface lines at the Brooklyn end of the bridge to the IND High Street Station.

A transfer was also established between the BMT Bridge-Jay Streets Station and the IND Jay Street Station.

In both cases the transfers from surface lines and the el trains indicated that they were valid on the IND only as far as Broadway - Nassau Street.

Passengers going from Manhattan to Brooklyn would request transfer upon exiting from the railroad clerk at High Street for the surface lines or at Jay Street for the el lines.

Sometime in the middle 1950's the TA began to restrict this transfer privilege. Beginning on June 25, 1956 the transfers to the bus lines formerly issued at High Street would now be issued only at Broadway - Nassau Street to someone buying a token.

Three months later on September 15, 1956 the transfer to the el lines formerly issued at Jay Street would now be issued only at Broadway - Nassau Street to someone buying a token.

This privilege was further restricted on January 1, 1957 when transfer from the el to the subway would only be issued by railroad clerks at stations between Sumner Avenue and Navy Street to passengers buying a token and requesting one. At nights and all day Sunday there were no agents on duty at these stations and fares were collected on the train by the conductor. During these times the railroad clerk at Bridge-Jay Streets issued the transfer. Presumably at this time the transfers to the el trains issued at Broadway - Nassau Street began bearing the legend "valid only for a continuing ride for stations from Navy Street to Sumner Avenue."

The Myrtle Avenue El was discontinued south of Broadway (Brooklyn) on October 4, 1969 its replacement was the B-54 Myrtle Avenue bus. The transfer privilege to and from the IND at Jay Street was retained presumably with the same restrictions.

The bus transfer privileges established at High Street on March 6, 1950 were to five routes; B-57, B-62, B-67, B-69 and B-75. On February 7, 1988 the B-67 and B-75 were re-routed and the transfer point for these two routes was moved to Jay Street.

On January 1, 1990 the TA discontinued all but two subway to bus transfer points. The two exceptions were at Rockaway Parkway to the B-42 and at 3rd Avenue - 149th Street to the Bx-55.

I am indebted to Mr. Bernard Linder for an article titled "Rapid Transit Transfers" which appeared in the February, 1980 issue of The Bulletin and to a subsequent article which appeared in the February, 1990 issue of The Bulletin for this information.

I also referred to my collections of subway maps.

If the main line along Fulton St had been the 3 tk el instead of the subway, it probably would have been able to handle it since the population simply wouldn’t have grown as much. Even if it did, the capacity would only have been needed in the peak direction and the rush hour trains into Manhattan would have been laid up somewhere midday to await the PM rush

Thanks for posting. The MTA didn't waste any time tearing down the Myrtle. It ceased operations in 10/1969 and a little more than a year later was gone. The Culver Shuttle ceased operations in 05/1975 and wasn't torn down until around 1983. BTW, you don't see too many 'Luncheonettes' any more.

I found it very depressing seeing those photos. I am sure it would be a very busy line today, perhaps blossoming like the L or G line, which could have been given up for dead 30 years ago.

By now the proposed R39L would have come up for replacements.
Blowhard Ronan managed to weasel out of it all.

Culver Shuttle, OTOH, I don't think had any potential, especially once BMT Lawrence Street was rebuilt.

I liked Lunchenettes. Now I like Greek coffee shops and diners (not Starbucks, DD, etc.)

By all rights, the Elevated should have remained in service.
At that time, the new MTA was dead set on reducing as much trackage as possible, reducing it responsibility in NYC.
Less trackage to maintain, more money for suburban rail.
They figured the G line, and the B54 bus was enough to replace the line without replacing it.
However, the new housing stock that was planned for the area hinged on rapid transit being available for the influx of new people moving in. Since the train vanished, the new homes were never built, the area fell off quicker than greased lightening.

Today, the lack of mass transit in the area didn't do much to deter new growth, as plenty of new homes have been built, with more coming.
So much so, that the MTA is mapping out a new SBS, and new street railway to serve it.

Yeah, that was what I was getting at. Joe Korman's website has the GO for closing the line. Apparently, only a few runs (about a week's worth) of work trains were allowed s/w of Broadway after 10/4/69.

I guess they were interested in getting it ripped down quickly...

Really terrible. It left a major hole in the network. I can think of times where I might have used it.

Why was a full block west of Broadway left standing?

I heard two stories.

1) Because the sub station on Myrtle Ave between Broadway and Lewis was still being used.

2) Keeping the abandoned structure up as an anchor for the rest of the structure.

I don't if any of these is true or not.

An interesting truss I'm not surprised the ground shook when it came down.

When the truss was being lowered very slowly and lightly touched the street, you can feel the ground shake a bit. Nothing like an earthqauke, but I remember that well.

By now the proposed R39L would have come up for replacements.
Blowhard Ronan managed to weasel out of it all.

I was told Harold Fisher was the driving force for the shut down of Myrtle. Something about it being a blight in the neighborhood. An early attempt in 1967 failed, but two years later, it happened.

Excellent pictures, but an unfortunate subject.

Thank you. Yesterday, I rode the B-54 to Broadway, passing street names my father would tell me about since he grew up there.

My family had an second floor apartment on Park Ave off of Skillman St. As an infant on a hot summer night, I had to hear the motors of the 700 series BU's traversing the line a block away.

The fix was in !

Thanks for the pictures. I wish I had gotten a chance to see that bridge over flatbush.

That line definitely would be popular today. The R39 might have been replaced by the R142 or R188 maybe. Would have been interesting to see those cars laid up with the R160's in Fresh Ponds. Or maybe they would have shutdown that portion of the el and modified it to regular B Division standards.

"... Keeping the abandoned structure up as an anchor for the rest of the structure."

Thats what I heard, more than once & from more than one source. I think the term used was "Maintain Structural integrity" of the main structure in the B'Way Myrtle Ave area.

When I worked for a manufacturing company near the Culver el in the mid 80's, shortly before demolition, a couple of adventurous young men tried to drive a "borrowed" car up one of the station staircases one weekend. Didn't get too far up the stairs. So they tried again at speed. Got a little higher up.

Maintaining the structural integrity of the Myrtle el and not the Broadway el, correct ?
