The Shore Line Trolley Museum in East Haven has one preserved SIRT car that they are trying to restore. I wish I could remember the car number. There was one car at the Seashore Museum in Maine. Although mechanically complete, the car had been significantly vandalized at various storage sites in New York before they got it. It is number 366. |

I wish I could remember the car number.#388 (SLTM) The control trailer that was the gift shop at TMNY IIRC was #501. #501 suffered a small fire when at NYCTA's 36th St yard. The TMNY acquired it and fixed it up nicely. It was painted inside and out and served as their first gift shop, selling ride tickets too. One night, vandals broke in the car, set it on fire and was totally destroyed. IIRC, Millens steel across the street scrapped the car. That was what I was told years ago. Bill Newkirk |

In 1927 a fire at Tottenville destroyed five motor cars; 319,358,376,378,382. Following the fire five trailer cars were converted to motor cars; 502 to 390 505 to 391 506 to 392 507 to 393 509 to 394 The SIRT fleet was now composed of 90 motor cars and five trailer cars. June 25, 1946 – a fire at the Saint George Terminal eight motor cars; 307,313,316,322,333,351,377,390. The SIRT fleet was now composed of 82 motor cars and five trailer cars. In 1948 two motor cars were destroyed in a derailment at South Beach; 323,363. On March 31, 1953 SIRT ceased passenger operation on the Arlington (North Shore) Line and the South Beach Line. I 1953 and 1954 25 motor cars and the five remaining trailer cars were sold to the New York City Transit Authority. (See below) The SIRT fleet was now composed of 55 motor cars. April 5, 1962 – seven motor cars were destroyed in a fire at the Clifton Shops; 306,311,318,326,338,372,379. The SIRT fleet was now composed of 48 motor cars. These cars remained in service until replaced by the ME-2’s (read R-44) in 1973. The MTA took over operation of SIRT in 1971 creating the Staten Island Rapid Transit Operating Authority (SIRTOA) At that time ownership of the ME-1’s was transferred to the New York City Transit Authority. 45 or the remaining cars where scrapped. Three cars survived. 366 at the Seashore Trolley Museum, 388 at Shoreline Trolley Museum (Branford) and 353 at the Travis Yard on Staten Island. Cars Transferred to the NYCTA in 1953 and 1954. 25 motor cars and the five remaining trailer cars. The motor cars were renumbered as follows. 2900 x 391 2901 x 349 2902 x 341 2903 x 309 2904 x 329 2905 x 344 2906 x 373 2907 x 301 2908 x 305 2909 x 387 2910 x 336 2911 x 364 2912 x 383 2913 x 362 2914 x 342 2915 x 394 x 509 2916 x 339 2917 x 357 2918 x 300 2919 x 310 2920 x 340 2921 x 350 2922 x 345 2923 x 354 2924 x 304 The five trailer cars were all placed in work service they were 500,501,503, 508. 504 was renumbered 2925. 2900 to 2925 as well as 500 and 503 were on the August 1961 Scrap-list. 501 was reportedly scrapped in August 1973 by mistake. 2925 x 504 was used as a Yard Office in the Fresh Pond Yard. On January 14, 1966 she was struck by Q-Type 1609C and literally thrown of the BMT and pushed down into the open cut of the LIRR Montauk Branch. She was scrapped sometime after that. She was subsequently scrapped. 508 was acquired by the Trolley Museum of New York in 1980 and was used as a Visitor’s Center until a fire in November 1991. She was cut up and removed from the property in the Spring of 1992. I have tried to be as accurate as possible with this roster. Glad I got to ride these in SI that one summer 66 or 67.Would have liked to have ridden these on the BMT, but didn't for same reason never rode C-Types or gate cars on Myrtle prior to 1958 - my family didn't have Brooklyn roots. :( Parents were transplants from upstate NY - loved city (Manhattan), but wanted space & so moved out to Queens after Korean War: to garden apts. at intersection of Hillside/Manor Rd./Springfield Blvd. My mom's relatives on Kent St. Brooklyn (that's when my parents used the W's'burg bridge trolley terminal), had moved out by that time. My Dad's crony from dental school lived way south of Flatbush & we took the Belt when visiting them. |

And are the SIRTOA R-44's still designated as ME-2's? All one hundred cars were built by Standard Steel. I have seen reliable references to these cars as ME-1, MU-1 and MUE-1. I use the ME-1 designation. Folks on this board have said that the original 400 series cars were designated as ME-2. Then a campaign to save these cousin's of the Standards, and the SIRT Mue-1, must be mounted.          Good original photos of the B3 Broad Street cars. These 50 cars numbered from 151 to 200. These cars saw 45 years of service and the fleet was formally retired in 1983 along with the 150 1928 B1 cars and the 25 1936 "Bridge" B2 cars that were built for Bridge Line (Camden-Locust) service. The current fleet of Kawasaki B4 cars would replace all three older car types. There have been one each of these three cars saved for preservation and in storage at Fern Rock with 1928 car #1 in its original paint scheme. A fourth car was kept for parts (a 1928 I believe). I know of rail enthusiasts that are trying to find a good place for these cars in a museum or some other sort of preserved state but have run into storage problems - trying to keep them underground on spur tracks at or near stations such as lower level PAT&Tison Station they have attracted homeless vagrants as an example. In recent years SEPTA tried at one point to sell off these cars for scrap - but since SEPTA does not own them - the four cars are City of Philadelphia property officially - the City ordered that they be kept. The mechanical interior station sign was one of the more interesting features of the 1938 cars and it would be interesting to find out when their use was discontinued. I recall these signs were painted over and wonder if the mechanical destination roll sign itself was intact inside the box or was it removed... Saving the Broad Street Vintage subways languishing at Fern Rock and Restoring them. Restoring the SIRT cars. Saving and restoring Two or three Standards. Forming an association to tour these monuments around the various museums for one or two weekends from Spring Break until and including Thanksgiving. Falling short, then Mike's Train House (MTH) will just have to come out and make SIRT cars, both Staten Island and BMT livery, and Broad Street cars in their various car types, and livery. |

In the late 80s, 3 cars were there. Then there was 1.Not meaning to be difficult or unappreciative of your efforts, but I really don't think it lasted as long as 2009. I live on SI, and I think it disappeared well before freight service resumed on the Travis Line. I've long assumed that all 3 cars were moved to Travis when the North Shore line was still usable... |
