But did you notice that three cars were CAB cars and two were non-cab cars, and two DE power cars. Can we assume that the CAB cars are not functioning yet, therefore the need for two DE's? Do the MARC cars to exceed the weight of six C-3's? Ergo two DE's. Will the foamers ever see a MARC CAB car leading the way to Port Jeff? |

What other Commuter lines in the US use the Sumitomo/ Nippon Sharyo "MARC II" type cars? The only single levels that MARC has in service these days are the Sumitomo-built "MARC II" cars. The Sumitomos date from the late 80s, when most of the other northeast commuter roads were picking up Bombardier-built cars like NJTs Comets. The MARC IIs are actually quite similar in many respects. MARC has: - (50) Kawasaki MARC III Bi-Levels Coaches: (33) Standard (T) Cars (7) Cars w/snack bar (10) Cab Cars - (13) Kawasaki Bi-Level Coaches (ex-VRE): (9) Standard (T) coaches (4) Cab Cars - (60) Nippon Sharyo/Sumitomo MARC II Single Level Coaches and Cab Cars (26) MARC IIA (rebuilt a number of years ago) (34) MARC IIB (currently being rebuilt by Bombardier) - (12) Pullman Bi-Level Gallery Coaches (70's era refurbished, ex-Metra) |

MTA will provide training to LIRR train operators, maintenance personnel as well as to a LIRR Trainer in order to ensure proper operation, maintenance and troubleshooting practices are followed and ordinary repairs are performed responsibly." Just one more thought, could a single, C-3 Cab car be the lead for the MARC's coaches, with minimal modifications? If spare C-3 Cabs were available? |

So, then will the other shoe drop in year 4?When the MARC, Bi-level rehab finishes, will the LIRR seek to acquire permanently these single level cars, if MARC declares them to be surplus? Or will MARC keep them for rentals? From all of the revenue video's, they appear to be well kept and have a pleasing internal ambiance. I'll bet there is a lot of platform re-positioning by the passengers to line up with the different door locations. |

I was never suggesting them (either the powered EMU or trailer cars) as being the equal of a purpose built push-pull, just pointing out their existence and similarity to the Marc cars since I was unsure of how specific an answer the original poster was seeking. The amount of time and money to repurpose them makes it highly unlikley that they have any future when they retire. |

Posted by Joe V on Sat Jul 1 20:00:31 2017, in response to Re: MARC cars to LIRR ?, posted by Avid Reader on Sat Jul 1 12:20:30 2017. MN needs their Comet V for the Port Jervis line. They simply are not available. Still gotta put LIRR's ASC in themThe MARC cars are Amtrak NEC-certified with ASCES et al. LIRR cannot at this time go and disrupt that. LIRR got their cab cars because they'll take whatever MARC says, and LIRR needs bathrooms on 50% of its cars. I notice MARC has several Brunswick line trains with NJT-style MLV's and a Sumitomo trailer next to the engine. So maybe they have excess cab cars. The Comet 3's have been idle by 6 or 7 years. Then they got flood damaged. They needed a mid-life overhaul anyway. I just don't see anyone willing to spend $1 mil per car to fix them. I expect that after the bank lien term runs out, they'll quietly cut them up. |
