Southbound 1 train riders won't be told to move to the front 5 cars any more. So a train with passengers can't use the loop because passengers would be stuck. So no in-service trains can use the loop. So what happens when a platform is never used by in-service trains?The only exception I've ever known of was when the now N/Q Canal Street platform had to stay open to act as a transfer corridor even though it had no trains. Similarly, the 6th Ave L platform may stay open when the L closes. But that doesn't apply to the 1 loop. |

As of last night (6/27), they already put wood panels up over the doorway to the mezzanine, and a chain link barrier over the entrance stairway. I was directly referring to the tracks that the A & C trains travel over 24/7/365 at Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets that also happens to be against a platform that has been out of service for decades - not the local tracks against the walls to lead directly to/from the Court Street station.This is similar to the express tracks at the 59th Street/Columbus Circle station where 24/7/365 where A & D trains have traveled over for decades - even though the center platform was out of service for decades until recent station renovation. They may be visible to the public but they are a closed portion of the station. That was exactly my point. If a platform is not used by in-service trains, it is generally closed to the public, the only exception I can remember being what is now the Canal St N/Q when that side of the Manhattan bridge was closed. |

There are 2 South Ferry loops.The 1 uses the outer loop and the 5 uses the inner loop. The inner loop hasn't had its platform be used in many decades - it's even less functional than the outer loop platform. |

As of June 16,2017 and continuing to Spring 2018, the Clark Street Tube will be closed every weekend for reconstruction.2 trains will terminate at South Ferry (new station). On 6/16-6/19 and 6/23-6/26 they terminated at Rector St and ran light around the outer loop. Trains will run local from 34 St to SF. 3 trains will terminate at 14th St. 4 trains will go to New Lots and 5 trains will go Flatbush and make all local stops south of Atlantic Av. Clark St and Hoyt St will be closed on weekends. |

I don't think the maximum number of weekend tph for 1 + 2 exceeds the maximum number of weekday tph of the 1 alone.Weekday rush the 1 can have 16 or more tph. Weekend I doubt either is more than 8. Actually, from what I was told, the middle platform of 59 St was not used at all when the IND first opened, and only opened for rush hour only passenger use in the early 1950s. In the AM rush only S/B trains opened to the middle plat and in the PM rush, only the N/B trains opened there. I think the opening of the center platform coincided with the elimination of the rear C/Rs on 10 car trains due to the special operating arrangement for the opening of the doors on the middle. During rush hours, a platform C/R was stationed at the C/R position to open the doors on the off side. there was a special button on a column adjacent to the C/R position that was energized by the plat C/R during his hours of operation. Under normal circumstances, the road C/R while observing the platform can operate the emergency valve should he see a passenger caught in the doors as the train departs. Since he couldn’t see the off side as the train was moving out, the special button by the plat C/R could be activated to apply the brakes on the train by activating the stop arms on the leaving home signals on each express track thereby applying the brakes in emergency if a passenger was observed being dragged. I don’t know how the situation was handled when the R-16s with inside door controls ran on the A and although I was a T/D at 59 St quite frequently, I never paid attention to how it was done when the R-32s and 42s started to appear in increasing numbers. I believe, that the logistical problem with opening the doors on the off side was why the TA decided to stop using the middle platform although now with almost the entire A and D Line fleet having transverse cabs, the middle platform could probably be used again. |

First, I don’t see how much difference there is on those cars from the differences in the door locations between the R-12s/14s/15s and the later equipment when mixed trains of them ran for years on the 1. Also knowing that the gap fillers existed at So/Fy and other stations before the new station was even planned, why didn’t the cesspool of incompetence that passes for TA planning and new car engineering see to it that the cars were designed so the doors of all cars lined up properly with ALL gap fillers at ALL stations so equipped? |

During the Ronan era, with 75' car mentality applied to the IRT, they started to design a 57' car so as to run 9 car trains, instead of 10. The R62s door arrangement is different than the R12s/14s/15s.While the doors on the R12/14/15 cars are offset to the doors on the opposite side of the car, the R62s doors are parallel to the doors on the opposite side. I seem to recall (I might be wrong on this) at one point after the R62s were introduced to the west side lines, that there was a project that the gap fillers at SF were realigned to match up with the doors. SF is the only station with the gap filler "problem". The gap fillers at 14th St on the 4,5,6 worked w/o any issue. There are no other stations with active gap fillers (Times Square on the Shuttle is a different situation altogether) in the system. But you are right wondering why (I always wondered that) they didn't set the specs on the R142/142As to be able to platform at SF. It is interesting to note that the A cars on R142/142As have the same parallel door alignment as the R62/62As. |
