The doors on the R-12/14/15s are symmetrical and opposite each other. They were offset beginning with the R-17s through the R-36s.

In addition to what has been said - the doorways on the inner loop platform have been sealed with cinder-blocks decades ago, and painted black. There is I think one doorway that is accessible. While the outer loop platform was open one could easily see the cinder-blocked openings within the curved wall.

The capability to use the inner loop platform was lost decades ago, as well as by the changes in rolling stock.

In my personal observation, most of the inner loop openings were sealed up in 1997 or 1998.

But you are right wondering why (I always wondered that) they didn't set the specs on the R142/142As to be able to platform at SF. It is interesting to note that the A cars on R142/142As have the same parallel door alignment as the R62/62As.

There were arguments in favor of both straight-across and offset doors when deciding the R142. Either would have been fine for South Ferry, it just might have meant pulling R142s up to a slightly different stop marker.

The problem was, they decided to King Solomon it and have A cars mimic the R62s and B cars mimic the redbirds with offset doors. No amount of selective car spotting can handle that.

Meanwhile in the B division, the R143/160/179 will all have the exact same door positions. The R211 is going to break from this, making platform screen doors impossible for yet another generation.

If not for the gapfiller problem, rush hour 5s. A few short turn there anyway, put it on the schedule, and only open the platform for those few arrivals/departures.

On the NYCSubway.Org website there are pictures of what looks like transit-fan trip exploring the inner-loop station. It appears that some - most - all of the doorways were open in 1997.

The paragraph description does not give a clue as to when the cinder-blocks were applied. The descriptive paragraph says: "The inner loop platform at South Ferry is now used for crew quarters, offices, storage, etc. and has a separate entrance from the fare zone upstairs."

The Bowling Green - South Ferry Shuttle stopped its operations in 1977.

The gap fillers wouldn’t have been the only problem. Clearances on other parts of the IRT preclude cars longer than the current length.

When trains with R-12s through 15s with symmetrical doors ran in consists with later SMEES with offset doors, there didn’t seem to be any problem so why the problem with the R-142s?

I don't know, but the NTT trains have much wider doors. Maybe that leaves too little room for tolerance ?

The guy who unfortunately makes you look bad. But it doesn't have to be that way. Your choice. But you can't deny that it was really funny that you asked if it was going to close AFTER it had already closed, and besides, it closed last time the new SF terminal opened, so why would it be different this time?

I read that if they really wanted to, they could program the R-142/142As so that only their center doors would open. Are those cars so equipped?
