Actually, from what I was told, the middle platform of 59 St was not used at all when the IND first opened, and only opened for rush hour only passenger use in the early 1950s. In the AM rush only S/B trains opened to the middle plat and in the PM rush, only the N/B trains opened there. I think the opening of the center platform coincided with the elimination of the rear C/Rs on 10 car trains due to the special operating arrangement for the opening of the doors on the middle. During rush hours, a platform C/R was stationed at the C/R position to open the doors on the off side. there was a special button on a column adjacent to the C/R position that was energized by the plat C/R during his hours of operation. Under normal circumstances, the road C/R while observing the platform can operate the emergency valve should he see a passenger caught in the doors as the train departs. Since he couldn’t see the off side as the train was moving out, the special button by the plat C/R could be activated to apply the brakes on the train by activating the stop arms on the leaving home signals on each express track thereby applying the brakes in emergency if a passenger was observed being dragged. I don’t know how the situation was handled when the R-16s with inside door controls ran on the A and although I was a T/D at 59 St quite frequently, I never paid attention to how it was done when the R-32s and 42s started to appear in increasing numbers. I believe, that the logistical problem with opening the doors on the off side was why the TA decided to stop using the middle platform although now with almost the entire A and D Line fleet having transverse cabs, the middle platform could probably be used again. |
