I notice the Philadelphia media seem to describe SEPTA technical problems much more thoroughly and accurately than the New York media does with the MTA. |

Jeff Knueppel, SEPTA’s general manager, is a pleasure to listen to, with his "engineering" background. He gets the information from his people and relays it back to the public in a manner a layman can understand. |

From an engineering perspective, the two wire system makes much more sense because it inherently has less points of failure. There are at least three additional points in the provided pictures that could fail: the additional connectors between the upper messenger wire and lower wire of the messenger system, the lower messenger wire itself, and the additional connectors between the lower messenger and the actual contact wire for the power to connect to the train's pickup bar.By eliminating as many possible points of failure as possible, one reduces the possible things which could fail in the system. In that way the two wire system should theoretically be far more reliable. K.I.S.S. |

The thing is, the three wire system, properly done, is much better at higher speeds. The British used 60mph as the deciding point between simple and compound catenary. Also, they used weighed designs, which have so many other advantages it's a no brainer. To get a good idea of the state of the art in the 60's, dig up the BTC electrification conference proceedings (in PDF). It covers a LOT of stuff: http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/docsummary.php?docID=34 The report on the early transformer explosions is interesting, too: http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/docsummary.php?docID=732 The power electronics industry was grateful to get away from anything involving mercury arcs.... |

That's great, even decades ago they went into detail of the technology on buses. I've seen bus terminals open around the country with decent coverage. A new intermodal terminal is opening up within days in Birmingham, Alabama, they have one of those newspapers that want to cease publications. It was the most boring, uninformative piece I ever read. The picture of the terminal had digital screens, you'd think they could talk about it somehow. I don't even think they mentioned the size of the facility other than it being 3 blocks long. |

The PRR/Amtrak wouldn't have chosen a three wire system if it was not superior. Something doesn't smell right because nobody else seems to be having this problem.I believe that the 3-wire system might allow for easier changing of the contact wire. Maybe SEPTA just needs to invest in some basic maintenance. |

As TCG said that is more a function of SEPTA's PR people than the newspaper. The fact that the article did not mention that Amtrak and NJT both use 3-wire cat and do not have the same problems indicates that SEPTA is doing something wrong. |

The PRR/Amtrak wouldn't have chosen a three wire system if it was not superiorSuperior to what? What else existed for AC when the New Haven/PRR system came into being? I know you miss the New Haven's "triangular" wires. Japan Rail West uses similar three-wire systems to the PRR/NH/Amtrak. |
