From an engineering perspective, the two wire system makes much more sense because it inherently has less points of failure. There are at least three additional points in the provided pictures that could fail: the additional connectors between the upper messenger wire and lower wire of the messenger system, the lower messenger wire itself, and the additional connectors between the lower messenger and the actual contact wire for the power to connect to the train's pickup bar.

By eliminating as many possible points of failure as possible, one reduces the possible things which could fail in the system. In that way the two wire system should theoretically be far more reliable. K.I.S.S.
