The thing is, the three wire system, properly done, is much better at higher speeds. The British used 60mph as the deciding point between simple and compound catenary. Also, they used weighed designs, which have so many other advantages it's a no brainer.

To get a good idea of the state of the art in the 60's, dig up the BTC electrification conference proceedings (in PDF). It covers a LOT of stuff:
