I remember when the R68As entered service. It was a breath of fresh air for the Concourse D train riders.

Yup.
The Concourse section was stuck with the beat up 42s pre rehab cars, and whatever else that could make service.

Are you sure about the number of the south motor of the derailed #5 train? At that time cars were assigned to the various lines by their electrical manufacture. The 5 was a GE line and car 7260 was a WH car which would normally have been assigned to either Bway or Lenox. Could it have been 7620 which was a GE car?

Would it be a safe guess that the 6 train was also a WH line and the 2 and 4 trains are GE equipped lines?

Westinghouse: 1/3/6.

GE: 2/4/5.

7 had both, single cars were Westinghouse, but supposedly at a very later time 9337 was converted to GE.

R12 - R15's were banned from the ends and conductor positions for a while as they lacked a PA system.

Initially, the R-12s and 14s were banned from C/R potions when the radio antennas were installed. I never received a full explanation but it would either have been because the C/Rs were being injured when climbing the steps or the antennas were bing damaged. In any case not only were the R-12 and 14s banned from C/R positions but even the R-15s were, despite that fact that they had inside door controls. When a smaller improved antenna was installed on the R-12 through 15s, the IRT supt still kept the ban in place on all lines except the 3 Av el which only had cars with outside door controls. I never saw any bulletin banning what were referred to as “Queens” cars from the head end and in fact towards the end of their service life several R-14s had their steps and door controls removed entirely and their headlights relocated and were used exclusively on the head ends of trains.

Although the 6 Line was also a WH line, for some reason, neither the R-12s through 15s, or the 21s and 22s were used on the 6. The only singles on the 6 were the R-17s.

The reason I was able to guess that correctly because I remember particularly, the R17s, R21s and the R22s on the 2, 4, and 5 trains had a loud moan or whine when they accelerated and it would continue until the train came to a full stop. What was that sound?

However, the 4 also operated the 6700s R17s (before R62s) which didn't make that sound.

Greller's book ("New York City Subway Cars") shows an R14 at either the head or end of a #3 train at Flatbush Avenue in the 1980s (white paint job, red "3" bullet in the bonnet sign...). I forget which page, but I saw this just this past Saturday, while checking out my own library.

So while I've also read that the R12/14s were banned from the operating position for a while (and I take your word for it as well), there is also no doubt that near the end of their lives, they found their way back there.

GE R-16s through 22s had blower cooled resistors rather than the air cooled resistors of the WH cars. The 16s through 21s emitted a whine when accelerating whereas the R-22s emitted a low hum not too dissimilar from a propeller powered airplane. I have heard that this setup more so on the R-16s was very troublesome but I never heard about the GE cars on the IRT giving the same trouble. The problem I believe was that if the blowers were not properly cleaned, dirt would accumulate which would then be blown onto the resistors causing fires. I suppose the IRT’s car equipment dept was better at keeping the blowers clean than the BMT’s crew at ENY Barn. Starting with the R-26s, GE reverted to its previous setup of air cooled resistors and these were less problematic. Sometime in the mid 1970, some WH R-17s like the 6700s were transferred to Mosholu Barn for Woodlawn service breaking the segregation between WH and GE cars. Interestingly, the lines that had WH cars which were Bway, Lenox and Pelham were the same lines that were equipped with Hi-Vs in the old days and the lines that had GE cars like Woodlawn, White Plains Rd and E180/Dyre were the same line equipped with Lo-Vs in the old days. Right now there is a similar division of car types on the IRT with the former Hi-V lines having R-62 and 62A cars and the former Lo-V lines having R-142s.

I was just thinking of that yesterday.

The former GE car lines now use R142/142A.

The former WH car lines now use R62/62A, with the exception of a few new techs on line 6.

And as you mention HI V's vs. Love V's

Coincidence?

Damn! You just explained a lot. Thanks.

In the case of the R16s, I guess the 6400s made the whine or moan sound-never heard it on the 6300s-I never rode the 6400s.

It was the 6400s that made the whine. One morning in 1967 when I was working Tower 1 at ENY, a train of R-16s from the Bway Bkln Lcl was coming up from E/Pky into Atlantic Av. At the top of the hill, one of the motor generator/blower sets exploded and a thick cloud of red smoke came out from under the car. With where the train was, I thought that it would probably block both the Bway Bkln line and the 14 St Line but the train was able to proceed into Atlantic and clear both lines.

What year are you speaking of? I know the 6 train operated about 50 R22s (7450-7499) for years until sometime in 1987 when they were sent to the 3 train to temporarily replace their 50 R22s (7400-7449) until the R62As replaced everything.

I know at least until 1966, when I went into the schedule office, there were no R-22s on Pelham because working in the command center I dealt with train consists and no R-22s ever showed up. It could be possible that those R-22s showed up on Pelham when some of the 6700 series R-17s went to Woodlawn for a while
