Initially, the R-12s and 14s were banned from C/R potions when the radio antennas were installed. I never received a full explanation but it would either have been because the C/Rs were being injured when climbing the steps or the antennas were bing damaged. In any case not only were the R-12 and 14s banned from C/R positions but even the R-15s were, despite that fact that they had inside door controls. When a smaller improved antenna was installed on the R-12 through 15s, the IRT supt still kept the ban in place on all lines except the 3 Av el which only had cars with outside door controls. I never saw any bulletin banning what were referred to as “Queens” cars from the head end and in fact towards the end of their service life several R-14s had their steps and door controls removed entirely and their headlights relocated and were used exclusively on the head ends of trains. |
