GE R-16s through 22s had blower cooled resistors rather than the air cooled resistors of the WH cars. The 16s through 21s emitted a whine when accelerating whereas the R-22s emitted a low hum not too dissimilar from a propeller powered airplane. I have heard that this setup more so on the R-16s was very troublesome but I never heard about the GE cars on the IRT giving the same trouble. The problem I believe was that if the blowers were not properly cleaned, dirt would accumulate which would then be blown onto the resistors causing fires. I suppose the IRT’s car equipment dept was better at keeping the blowers clean than the BMT’s crew at ENY Barn. Starting with the R-26s, GE reverted to its previous setup of air cooled resistors and these were less problematic. Sometime in the mid 1970, some WH R-17s like the 6700s were transferred to Mosholu Barn for Woodlawn service breaking the segregation between WH and GE cars. Interestingly, the lines that had WH cars which were Bway, Lenox and Pelham were the same lines that were equipped with Hi-Vs in the old days and the lines that had GE cars like Woodlawn, White Plains Rd and E180/Dyre were the same line equipped with Lo-Vs in the old days. Right now there is a similar division of car types on the IRT with the former Hi-V lines having R-62 and 62A cars and the former Lo-V lines having R-142s.
