Former E-L Ferryboat BINGHAMPTON to be Scrapped

It was reported in the New York Times (11/28/16) that the former Lackawanna ferryboat “BINGHAMPTON” is to be dismantled and scrapped. The “BINGHAMPTON” was built in 1905 for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad. She was one of several boats known as the “Scranton” or “Barclay Street” class and her usual assignment was on the Hoboken – Barclay Street run. She was included in the 1961 merger of the Lackawanna and Erie Railroads and served until 1967 when the service ended.

She was acquired by a private owner and converted into a restaurant in Edgewater, New Jersey. The restaurant closed in 2007 and she has been slowly deteriorating at her pier. She may well be the last of the railroad-operated Hudson River ferryboats.

Stats: BINGHAMPTON, Official No. 201734, 187 x 43 x 16, 1462 tons,
Builder: Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock

Thanks for the pictures Bill. I rode the BING when she was still in service.

That is pretty much the case. The boat is partially sunk and trying to move it that condition would be risky.

Unfortunate. At least the general design is alive and well in the Staten Island Ferry, and the general purpose is still served by the NY Waterways Ferries. Compare to other transportation from the time period like the horse drawn streetcar, or the Zeppelin.

The lengthy article in today's NY Times (11.28.2016) said it had two steam engines. Is this correct? Did the shaft run through, so when it was pushing with the rear propeller, the front was pulling?
Thanks.

It's unfortunate that the Binghamton is going- we can't save everything. But as you've said, the general design is used for the Staten Island service, and the function is utilized by NY Waterway.

What a shame. There was something special in riding those North River ferries. They were impressive in a way that even the large older Staten Island Ferries were not.

Yes, they just went up and down the Hudson/NR but standing at the front seemed more like an ocean voyage, for all of 10-15 minutes or so.

Anyone ride the old Hudson River Day Line?

Actually, the Zeppelin (or dirigible) design is still in use. The difference between a Zeppelin and a Blimp is that the Zeppelin is a rigid airship with the skin stretched over a frame whereas the blimp is a collapsable balloon. Goodyear recently retired their blimp and replaced it with a rigid framed air ship which is more accurately a Zeppelin or dirigible.

At least the general design is alive and well in the Staten Island Ferry,

Surprisingly quite a number of double ended ferryboats are still in use and some are quite busy.

New York City has Governor's Island and Hart Island runs. CDOT operates the Chester-Hadlym ferry, SELDEN III. The Lake Champlain Transportation Company operates a fleet of ten boats on three routes. One route, the Grand Isle - Plattsburgh crossing runs 24/7 every day of the year. Shelter Island at the east of Long Island has two services. The North Ferry has five boats and the South Ferry has four. They run so frequently during the busy season that there is no schedule. They simply "load and go". Of course there are the three ferryboats on the Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World. They can carry about five hundred passengers on two decks.

That's probably what will be done. The boat is in such bad shape that she might break apart in midstream even if they could make the hull watertight.

The railroad ferries always possessed something of a quiet dignity. It may be that they were more then mere conveyances but part of great transportation networks. The railroads that they ran for were the premier transportation services of their day.
Even though its been over forty years since they last ran their names still command respect; New York Central, Pennsylvania, Lackawanna, Erie and Jersey Central. Indeed the Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken is still in use.

I remember the HRDL well. The high point of ever summer was the trip up the river to Bear Mountain. I was fortunate enough to ride the ROBERT FULTON in her last season on the river 1954. I have many memories of the PETER STUYVESANT, ALEXANDER HAMILTON and DAYLINER as well.

They always had bears ... in the zoo.

I spent some summers in Fort Montgomery. A favorite prank of some of the wiseguys was to call up the radio station and report that a bear had escaped from the zoo and was making its way up 9W. Those were simpler times.

I rode on the newer Dayliner, in the '70s. It was our first time going "upstate" to Bear Mountain. I didn't pay much attention to the trains at first (didn't know what to look for), but when I went again, years later in high school, I was fascinated with the ACMUs and M1As going up and down the Hudson (off-peak trains were only 3-4 cars, peak trains were only 5-6 cars), as well as the occasional Turboliner. That was when the Dayliner did school specials, which did OK at first. Problems started on later trips though - there was one incident related to a student taking LSD, then there was the time there was a huge riot on board the boat. The captain was urgently trying to dock, but nobody would allow him until they finally mustered enough law enforcement, I guess. Since then the Dayliner was discontinued and the pier is now used by someone else.
