At least the general design is alive and well in the Staten Island Ferry,

Surprisingly quite a number of double ended ferryboats are still in use and some are quite busy.

New York City has Governor's Island and Hart Island runs. CDOT operates the Chester-Hadlym ferry, SELDEN III. The Lake Champlain Transportation Company operates a fleet of ten boats on three routes. One route, the Grand Isle - Plattsburgh crossing runs 24/7 every day of the year. Shelter Island at the east of Long Island has two services. The North Ferry has five boats and the South Ferry has four. They run so frequently during the busy season that there is no schedule. They simply "load and go". Of course there are the three ferryboats on the Seven Seas Lagoon at Walt Disney World. They can carry about five hundred passengers on two decks.
