The railroad ferries always possessed something of a quiet dignity. It may be that they were more then mere conveyances but part of great transportation networks. The railroads that they ran for were the premier transportation services of their day. Even though its been over forty years since they last ran their names still command respect; New York Central, Pennsylvania, Lackawanna, Erie and Jersey Central. Indeed the Lackawanna Terminal in Hoboken is still in use. I remember the HRDL well. The high point of ever summer was the trip up the river to Bear Mountain. I was fortunate enough to ride the ROBERT FULTON in her last season on the river 1954. I have many memories of the PETER STUYVESANT, ALEXANDER HAMILTON and DAYLINER as well. Larry, RedbirdR33 |
