This will answer your questions - at least, on the Coast Starlight. Amtrak pulled out the video games from the lower section of a Superliner and fitted it with business class seats. Meals are also included and access to the Metropolitan Lounges along the route in LA and Portland.https://www.amtrak.com/ccurl/717/203/ATK-15-032%20Amtrak%20Coast%20Starlight%20Business%20Class%20Pilot%20Revised.pdf |

I walked through the business class car on the Cardinal in September. It was sparsely occupied with plenty of room to spread out, no screaming kids, and lacked the odor that crowded coach cars tend to accumulate by the second day. |

I'm guessing the food service car for the LSL Boston leg is going to be swapped from a full cafe car to one of the half cafe half business cars, probably for easier swapping at ALB. |

There's a lot of short haul traffic on these lines that make a Sleeper unnecessary, but might still desire upgraded accommodations. I know that if I were still traveling to Georgia I'd book the Crescent Bushiness Class in a heartbeat, or use a class upgrade coupon for it. |

Already has been for a while, as 448/449 has been a shuttle. Sleeper passengers get the club seats.I think the change is that it is they are keeping it as through service is reinstated. |

No it isn't a prelude to taking off the sleepers. On the Cardinal and Lake Shore, it is a Amfleet I Business-Dinette car. On the Crescent and Coast Starlight, it is an ordinary coach. On the Pennsylvanian and Palmetto, it is a 60 seat Amfleet-I coach even though there are also 3 LD Amfleet coaches. There is an accommodation surcharge , you get a few amenities, and the car is coupled next to the sleepers, so it is much quieter. I don't see why you have a problem with it. |

Considering they're ordering more Viewliner sleepers, any removal would be temporary. But they'd be insane to remove them anyway for the premium they command.I do think the Boston leg will not be getting its sleeper back for quite a while. Due to the platform project at ALB they have been running the Boston scoot with a Baggage View, Amfleet I cafe, and 2-3 Amfleet I/II coaches. The Boston sleeper has been going to NYP - maybe it's been filling up more consistently (or maybe simply easier maintenance). |

The starlight BC Cars got refurbished again for the service. While I'd still much prefer a sleeper, the seats are upholstered in the brown leather of most BC cars off the NEC, are rather nice, and have wifi. |

I just randomly checked the Crescent on Nov 15th NYP - ATL.Coach is $118, Biz class is $219, and there is only 1 seat left at that price. The car is an Amfleet-2 coupled between the baggage car and 1st sleeper. You get the horn all night. The unwritten reason why these things sell is to stay away from the Greyhound types in the coaches. I'll leave it at that. |

While I have generally found coach passengers on the LD trains to be fine, the one major exception has been trains to the south. The Silver Star and Crescent were two of the worst nights I have ever spent in coach. I'd certainly consider business class if the sleepers were sold out or extremely overpriced. |

This is not a bigoted statement, just an observation:The last 2 times when I board 49 at NYP, they don't assigned seats, just to specific cars, put all the Chicago's in the 4th coach. By the time the car was loaded at Albany, African-Americans were in the rear half, and others in the front half of the car. |

As seen at Chesteron, IN last night by somebody on another chatboard:"Saw the EB Lakeshore pass by Chesterton, IN last night (10/25) on the railstream camera. Consist was Boston section up front (VL baggage, sleeper, AmCafe, coaches) and NY section on rear (coaches, diner-lite, 2 sleepers, VL baggage, and a deadheading AmCafe)." |

I took 49 from ALB->CHI a few months ago, and they did assign seats. The Conductor(s) were writing seat numbers on seat checks at the door, in an effort to keep groups together (they had that data from the booking info - the only instance where it is better for one person to buy the entire party's tickets instead of everyone buying individually). A side note: when my seatmate at the window had left, I politely asked the conductor if I could switch, she approved and I did. The next guy was correctly assigned my former aisle seat. At the same stop (Buffalo) Some dumbass had moved without telling the conductor, she was pissed and made him go back to his original seat. |
