I took 49 from ALB->CHI a few months ago, and they did assign seats. The Conductor(s) were writing seat numbers on seat checks at the door, in an effort to keep groups together (they had that data from the booking info - the only instance where it is better for one person to buy the entire party's tickets instead of everyone buying individually). A side note: when my seatmate at the window had left, I politely asked the conductor if I could switch, she approved and I did. The next guy was correctly assigned my former aisle seat. At the same stop (Buffalo) Some dumbass had moved without telling the conductor, she was pissed and made him go back to his original seat. |
