"Scratch that, most of the spots are now permit parking ..."Scratch that, in Baldwin, at least, ALL of the spots are permit parking 6 AM to 1 PM Monday- Friday, which is nothing more than an obvious money-grab by the Town of Hempstead to chase away imaginary out-of-town residents, and mussels and clams from the south. The spaces are all usually filled anyway by 9 AM, even after the permit program started, and few of them are worth even a nickel as they are a long hike from the station. I absolutely refuse to cave in to such extortion; we already pay high enough taxes as it is. I either walk, have my father drop me off, or I park at my office in Carle Place and walk from there. http://www.saucci.net/baldwin-lirr-parking.htm |

DB doesn't have 750v DC 3rd rail.Hamburg S Bahn is third rail (1.5kv) and Berlin is 800V third rail. Hamburg is dual system, though. Of course, most AC system MUs that DB runs weigh less than an M-7, and they're on the 16 2/3rds system, which has a much heavier transformer than even 25hz. |

The work train may have been projecting only so much into the train's path. If the locomotive overlapped the EMU's path by ten inches, it's going to gouge out a max of ten inches from the train. That said, I'd rather be in a stoutly constructed car vs a tin can when my train runs into heavy equipment. The flip side of this is that commuter rail isn't very good on 'gas' (btu of energy consumed) despite having enormous advantages over rubber tire IC engine motor vehicles. Pop 3 friends in a Dodge Hellcat or just yourself in a Bolt and you've easily beaten the total energy use of a commuter train (you gotta count the 2/3rd empty reverse trip the thing makes, etc). No cupholders and trunk space on the train, either. |

You will probably not die in a car crash, but we will all get old, fussy and funless. The Miata is way safer than a motorcyle, and can be driven on a track where you can open it up and hone your driving skills. A nice thing about the Miata is you can go full-out on a road course and not get into huge speed before every corner, with 155 horsies you can use 100% of them. If you plan on doing some track days, get the brake upgrade. Not to go faster, but to spend less time changing brake pads. |

You couldn't get as close to the scene today since they has everyhthing roped off. As of about 1 PM, none of the cars had been uprighted yet. A worker said there was a lot of track damage. When I asked if it would be fixed by tomorrow's rush hour, he just shrugged his sholders. |
