LIRR accident in New Hyde Park

Passenger train sideswiped a work train. 3 or 4 cars derailed and damaged. There are injuries. I am here at the scene-pictures to follow. It was an eastbound train about 1/4 mile before Merillon Avenue station.

Did the passenger train or work train first derail and then the sideswipe happened since they were then too close to each other
Or...
There are switches in the area. It may have been that the work train was incorrectly being switched from the westbound to the eastbound track just as the passenger train passed by
Or???

If you're going to the city, better head out to the Babylon branch.

Huntington and Ronkonkoma trains go as far as Hicksville. All change for shuttle via central branch to Babylon. I believe another change at Babylon for a Babylon train to NYC.

They are also advising using Port Washington branch and Hempstead branch. Hourly service on 6-8 car Hempstead trains is going to be interesting to say the least. If they used supplemental trains between Hempstead and Penn Station that would at least make it a possible option rather than overloading the Babylon branch. You could have them leave Penn Station on the :12, which would usually be the Ronkonkoma train and that would provide approximately every half hour service since the usual Penn Station trains that connect to Hempstead train at Jamaica leave at :45

I said I was just thinking of Mineola but I'll probably do what I usually do on Sunday when the meter rules aren't in effect, that is drive to Queens Blvd at the Union Tnpk Station and take the E or the F. By the way, the Babylon line stations in the Town Of Hempstead now require a parking permit. While I live in the TOH I never got the permit.

Bob: Sometimes when work is being done on one track it is necessary to take the adjacent track out of service as well. The work train may have been fouling the in-service track without realizing it.

M-7s don’t have one for all practical purposes. They have something similar to what the R-160s have but there is also a metal panel that can cover it and most of the engineers use it.

And to think, if this was DB, this incident wouldn't happen in the first place. And we'd have 4 tph off-peak with trains that aren't slow as fuck to accelerate. As somebody that's tempted to go buy a Mazda Miata, I'm going to take my chances with the ET 430s over our junk.

Actually they do have 4 TPH on weekends, or soon will. Huntington service is half hourly, Ronkonkoma is hourly with half hourly part of the day and all day when the 2nd track gets built, and there's the Oyster Bay every 2 hours.

DB doesn't have 750v DC 3rd rail.
