If you can do 1 thing for MTA NYC Subways, what would you do? |
|
Posted by caine515 on Tue Sep 27 09:55:12 2016 This is a hypothetical question to the subchatters. Lets say you came into money. You can do 1 change to MTA NYC subways to improve it(it could be tracks, stations, cars) but ONE change is allowed. These are the two I would do:1-add a switch track between the southbound local to the express track near Broadway LAfeyette Street so if "B" or "D" have to go via 8th Ave, they can come back to their regular route after W 4th Street instead of being terminated at 2nd Avenue or via the "F" line. 2-extend the tracks past Parsons/Archer for either a new station to ease overcrowding or extra tracks to layup some "E" or "J" trains. |

Build a new elevated line in Manhattan with branches to Queens and Brooklyn, via bridges and connecting at flood-free locations to the subway system. That way if another superstorm* comes along, we can maintain service if low lying infrastructure needs to be closed for extended repairs. |

Not having a cross over near Broadway Laffiatte was a HUGE oops from the Christie Street addition. I consider that essential so B and D trains could resume normal routing when an 8th Avenue reroute is necessary. |

"2-extend the tracks past Parsons/Archer for either a new station to ease overcrowding or extra tracks to layup some "E" or "J" trains."on the "E" level the tracks (D1A and D2A) do extend beyond the station for roughly 3,000 feet so they can layup at trains on each track. * * This info from "Tracks of the New York City Subway" by Peter Doughtery. According to Peter, this was done as an intended link with the Montauk branch of the LIRR for a ROW sharing to Springfield Gardens in SE Queens. |

Build a line under Union Turnpike in Queens between Queens Boulevard in Kew Gardens and Lakeville Road in New Hyde Park. This line would serve customers in eastern Queens who have no subway service and need to rely on the packed Q46 bus lines.Stops would be located at Main Street (change for the Q20 and Q44 to Flushing), 164th Street (to serve Queens General Hospital) Utopia Parkway (to serve St. John's University), 188th Street (to serve the Jamaica Estates neighborhood and nearby Cunningham Park) Francis Lewis Boulevard (also serves Cunningham Park) Bell Boulevard (change for bus lines serving Windsor Park and Bayside) Springfield Boulevard (change for bus to Alley Pond Park) Stronghurst Avenue (serve the Bellerose community) Winchester Boulevard (change for bus to Douglaston community) Little Neck Parkway (serves the Little Neck/Glen Oaks areas) 260th Street (bus terminal for some lines) Lakeville Road/City Line (serves LI Jewish Hosp) |

Not necessarily all timers but only the unnecessary ones and speed up the ones a bit that are needed. Once when riding the F between Prosp Pk and ft Hamilton, I observed the train’s speedometer. Although those timers were posted at 35 MPH, the timers were clearing perfectly at 28 MPH. When some of the planners from Chicago come in in the 1980s, there was supposed to have been a committee formed to assess the location of all GT signals, remove the ones that weren’t needed and adjust the ones that remained. The actual concept was that the signals would clear about 3 MPH ABOVE the posted limits which would still allow trains to proceed at the allowable speed without having to overslow for the signals to clear and to avoid bing tripped. Instead of the intended result, it seemed that more GT signals and wheel detectors were installed in places they never were before and weren’t needed and all the GT signals were slowed down even worse than before. |

I would fully rebuild the 3rd Avenue El (both Manhattan and the Bronx) that I think by the time the SAS is complete may be needed IN ADDITION TO the SAS, especially if all the buildings that are proposed for midtown are built. This might be the one exception to the rules of not building for the IRT. In this case, I would have three branches of the line: (8) that would be the Battery Park City Branch that would also be the main branch with peak direction express service between Chatam Square and Gun Hill Road. Going downtown, the line would actually once reaching Battery Park City (via Battery Place and before that Church Street, Chambers Street, Park Row, Centre Street and Worth Street) actually turn north and terminate at West Thames Street. (9) that would be the South Ferry Branch, with stops at South Ferry, the Seaport and At Avenue of The Strongest before Chatam Square. There also would be a shuttle that would run between West Thames Street and South Ferry that would be a (mostly) single track line between the two stations. The (10) would be the Brookfield Place Branch. This branch would run along Worth with the (8) until the (8) broke off at Centre Street, then go to West Street and end at Brookfield Place. Of course, this likely never happens, but...... |

Do you see any elevateds that were damaged by Sandy?I believe that an entire section of trackage crossing Jamaica Bay was wiped away by Hurricane Sandy. I remember seeing pictures of a boat that landed across the trackage and other heavy damage which took a great deal of time to repair. I seen to remember Rockaway communities complaining of the lack of subway service, and the resulting problems with the replacement bus services. I also seem to remember that some exposed train facilities were mightily impacted by the storm, not only in NYC, but also in New Jersey and other places. Mike |

Create Triboto RX from South Brooklyn to New Rochelle, with an additional crosstown branch in the Bronx, a parallel subway/TRX branch south of Flatbush Ave., and maybe branches to Jamaica and LaGuardia Airport. The system will be built to railroad specs, compatible with Metro North, but the cars will be subway-like in terms of acceleration, interior, and loading. |
