on the "E" level the tracks (D1A and D2A) do extend beyond the station for roughly 3,000 feet so they can layup at trains on each track. *

* This info from "Tracks of the New York City Subway" by Peter Doughtery. According to Peter, this was done as an intended link with the Montauk branch of the LIRR for a ROW sharing to Springfield Gardens in SE Queens.
