I am frustrated by the MTAPD/Amtrak PD's inability or unwillingness to keep the homeless out of the various eating establishments. McDonald's on the LIRR side and Tim Horton's (the only one now is on the Amtrak side thanks to Vornado Realty) are two of the places in which I have been accosted by homeless persons asking for money which is a scary situation indeed. Of course the store employees don't want to get involved since it is not their job in the first place and they no doubt fear being attacked as well. |

After Comrade Wilhelm took office, I noticed a bunch of homeless/unemployed people sitting around in the small triangle park under the Myrtle El at Forest Ave who'd never been there before.They seemed to have been some sort of problem that the Parks Department took away the park benches, so now these guys plop themsevels on the stairs to the station. I've also noticed an increase in people asking for money on the L. Some of whom look like Podunk types that got chewed up and spit out. |

I believe that the homeless deserve all the love, compassion and dignity anyone deserves. You'll find no disagreement with me on that front.Where I come in is that it's a two way street. Yes, society can be quite cruel about homelessness, but I do think people need to *want* better for themselves to have better for themselves. NYC is not Alabama, we have a very, very deep safety net and one does have the right to question how come the more we seem to spend on "solutions" the more we seem to have "problems". No matter how much money and resources are thrown at the problem it grows and grows. I give food when I see beggars because I don't want my money going up someone's nose or in someone's vain and I think most people are right to feel this way w/o being guilt-tripped. I think most reasonable people want an honest conversation about how to best solve this problem that balances compassion with realism. No one wants to live in Calcutta. There has to be a better way. |

Money wont exactly solve the Mental illness,but it would go a long way to provide financial assistance towards treatment(long or short term) For the various stages,and root causes/conditions. You cannot give an mentally ill person cash,and expect them to pick up where from where they may have fell off. Some of those people have acute behavioral issue,dependent on medication..and other factors to be taken under consideration. There is no universal cure all,but what is worse...the Attempt,or sit back and do NOTHING? |

Homeless people have bad attitudes as we have a hike and bike trail called the Springwater corridor that hundreds of these homeless are illegally camping next to and are in daily fights with homeowners as some are even trying to camp on their property, the mayor of Portland was to have a clean sweep of this area Aug 1st but changed it to Sept which made matters worse with the homeowners and people using this trail. It's been a problem for several years as these people are just down right nasty to everyone. Karl |

My thing is the city needs to shift away from the shelter system and start putting people (especially families) in actual HOUSING. And yes, if that means setting people up with an apartment in New Jersey or even Texas then so be it. Start setting up a housing voucher system and shut down the shelters once and for all. Once people get that part straightened out, then we can move on to the root causes (Rehab, Mental Health services, Domestic Violence assistance, etc)The other side of it that is far more controversial is I do believe it should be illegal to stay on the street. Since NYS is legally required to provide housing, then as a counterbalance we also should make sleeping in the street/subway system illegal. Accept help or go somewhere else. I know that sounds harsh, but compassion slices two ways. I do want to see the homeless helped (my family was homeless for 6 months in DC in the 1990s), but I don't want my trains/parks/sidewalks taken over. It's only *fair*. |

Thanks.I believe housing will be confiscated to achieve your goal. A widow in Middle Village in a 2 or 3 BR will see her home seized or ridiculously taxed, in order to house low income families, most likely immigrants, with lots of kids. |
