I believe that the homeless deserve all the love, compassion and dignity anyone deserves. You'll find no disagreement with me on that front.

Where I come in is that it's a two way street. Yes, society can be quite cruel about homelessness, but I do think people need to *want* better for themselves to have better for themselves. NYC is not Alabama, we have a very, very deep safety net and one does have the right to question how come the more we seem to spend on "solutions" the more we seem to have "problems". No matter how much money and resources are thrown at the problem it grows and grows. I give food when I see beggars because I don't want my money going up someone's nose or in someone's vain and I think most people are right to feel this way w/o being guilt-tripped.

I think most reasonable people want an honest conversation about how to best solve this problem that balances compassion with realism. No one wants to live in Calcutta. There has to be a better way.
