ATC is Automatic Train Control, I think you mean ATP Automatic Train Protection.

The condition that resulted in the running of the red had nothing to do with ATP being enabled or disabled. A train in manual mode with ATP enabled can stop and proceed with speed commands displaying 00 MPH at no more the 15 MPH.

Thanks , John, so the train was doing 10 mph. How many feet does it take to stop a train going 10 mph, in this case if the T/O saw the other train in front of him at the last minute or so?

During typical automatic operation, trains enter stations at no greater then 45 MPH, an 8 car will decelerate over a distance of 600' using a brake applications under B4 to bring the train to a stop at the end of the platform.

Controller handle in B5, probably something under 75', emergency brake application less the that.

The damn media blows everything out of the water, that wasn't dangerous, 10 mph + 150 feet away.

News story said the train improperly passed a red signal. The only signals are the absolute variety at interlockings.

That's true, however it is not uncommon to be instructed by ROCC to do so. My reading of the article indicates that the ROCC controller instructed him to do so, as both the controller and the operator have been suspended.

Not the controller's fault if the operator can't handle operating at Restricted speed.

This was more of a screw up then first reported. Both the operator and the controller screwed up.

Both trains were on the same track (track 2) track 2 is the westbound track. The train at Smithsonian was heading westbound, the other train that ran the red was heading eastbound, the interlocking was set to crossover the train standing at Smithsonian station platform.

The Smithsonian interlocking is the location of 01 13 1982 wreck that killed 3 and injured 25.
