As a footnote, there was a major fire in an AT&T/Illinois Bell joint facility in Hinsdale IINM during the 80s. One of the reasons the fire was so destructive is that the battery power continued to power the arcing/shorting after the CBs on the incoming commercial power had tripped. One description indicated melted plastic wire insulation was inches deep in the basement. |

Despite other definitions that have been given, I think the most sensible meaning for "warp factor" would be the ratio of light-minutes covered (in a reference frame with the galaxy as a whole at rest) to elapsed minutes of the ship's proper time (or light-hours to hours, etc.) On this scale, warp 1 = 70.71% of c, warp 2 = 89.44% c, etc. In general, warp n = sin(arctan(n)) c. |

That is assuming that the limits of special relativity are limits that there is no way around. If there are space-time bubbles of the sort I suggested before, which allow travel to effectively be faster than light, then I guess that scale wouldn't be too useful. |

It's just something I thought of a number of years ago, and thought I would share. I guess it doesn't really work with Star Trek. (If warp speed depended only on relativistic time dilation, they might return to Earth after the five-year mission to find that centuries had elapsed in their absence!) |

Yeah, I thought there was an algebraic equivalent, I just didn't bother working out what it was. My version is easier to type, or enter into a (scientific) calculator, even if it internally involves more calculations (and potential for round-off error). |

Random musing having nothing to do with the main topic at hand, but denial at contradicting evidence is how most people work. It takes an overwhelming amount of evidence to change anyone's belief once it has been established. In addition to having a solid argument, the hurdles of confirmation bias and pride must be overcome. It's far easier to instill beliefs into those who haven't given the topic much thought, than to try and change anyone's mind. Thus the reason debates exist, and why jurors shouldn't have any preexisting knowledge of the trial they are deliberating. |

Actually the first time I saw film of a woman undergoing a C-section wide awake and talking to the nurses as they inserted the needles, I was blown away. (Michelangelo Antonioni's documentary on China) Some 15 years later, I had several acupuncture sessions for pain in my elbows/forearms. The pain went away. YMMV, but as it worked for me, belief is not an issue. |

That is not to say that all claims of abduction are legitimate. I am sure that there are some who believe they were abducted and are certifiably nuts. There is also the possibility that the process of being abducted made them nuts.Defects in the brain’s wiring make us easy prey for conspiracy theories based on weak evidence. |
