It's not the passageway between 34th & 42nd on the 6th Avenue line. If it were, it would be littered with the carcasses of dismantled token/change both's, and other NYCT trash and with less illumination. The closed off station area at Roosevelt Avenue contains MoW offices and quarters along a long hallway. Looks like a station rehab'd location. Wild guess, IND station closed passageway at Nostrand Avenue towards Bedford Avenue |

This video may shed some light on the mystery. If this is the 6th Avenue passageway, the photo must have been taken from the 42nd Street station end because there is a significant drop in elevation on the 34th street end. If so, must have cleaned up the place, but then, a prominent room containing control equipment roon situated on the west wall of the passageway near 38th Street is not in view from 40th street end of the mezz.http://secondavenuesagas.com/2011/07/11/video-of-the-day-inside-the-6th-ave-ind-passageway/ |

They need to reopen this (6th Ave. passageway) and rent out space to shops and eateries. It would be a great amenity and a moneymaker for the MTA. |

I had gotten off a train at 42nd Street, near the 40th Street end. I looked toward the 40th Street end and saw the door leading into the passage open as seen in my photo. I was trying to be discreet about taking the picture, because there was a guy in a safety vest nearby. |

Only if it can attract the foot traffic, and in order for that to even begin happening, they need to (re)open many stairs up to the street. Even then, the best times would be during inclement weather. |

Door Says "Equipment and Control Offices. I guess that *is* where you put stuff like that. So maybe they clean it up a bit. Those old fossils could not stay there forever. Maybe they will re open it. It is as good a place as any for muggings and rapes. Now they can hide some Isistaani warriors in there. |

So what is it currently used for? The sign on the door says "Equipment & Material Control Office", but it certainly doesn't look like an "office". Is that just a fancy way of saying "storage room"?[The second message from the OP, R36 #9346, makes it clear that this is indeed the passage from the 42nd St. station (40th St.) to the 34th St. station (35th St.) under 6th Ave.] |

The picture you linked to is the 35th St. end, while the picture that started this thread is the 40th St. end. The doors look similar, but one end of the passage is level and has pillars in it, while the other appears to slope upward, and has no pillars. I'm wondering, though: is the right half of north entrance to the passage normally covered only by the gate seen in the picture here, or is there a solid door that is simply not visible in the picture because it is folded back behind the tiled wall? If there is no solid door there, then the passage would always be visible to some extent, even if normally unlit. But why would there be both a solid door and a gate? (Obviously, I haven't been to that location recently.) |

If the Gimbels passsageway were also reopened, those coming from Penn station, who worked on 6th ave. would be able to avoid bad weather completely. When I worked on 6th ave. and took the LIRR in, it was always a pain in the neck walk from 7th, to 6h on rainy days, abd during the winter months. As for security, more closed circuit TV's and available police. And if cost is a problem, why not do some research on other cities' mega concourses underground, or on those long airport passageways, and find out how others do it cost effectively. |

If crime ever gets going again (I hope it does NOT), the Dey Street Passageway, being outside of fare control, is a good candidate for becoming the nightmare the 6th Ave passage was. |
