when open, it was just plain convenient for either station, to exit at various points along 6th ave., and of course to avoid inclement weather.

If the Gimbels passsageway were also reopened, those coming from Penn station, who worked on 6th ave. would be able to avoid bad weather completely.

When I worked on 6th ave. and took the LIRR in, it was always a pain in the neck walk from 7th, to 6h on rainy days, abd during the winter months.

As for security, more closed circuit TV's and available police. And if cost is a problem, why not do some research on other cities' mega concourses underground, or on those long airport passageways, and find out how others do it cost effectively.
