The picture you linked to is the 35th St. end, while the picture that started this thread is the 40th St. end. The doors look similar, but one end of the passage is level and has pillars in it, while the other appears to slope upward, and has no pillars. I'm wondering, though: is the right half of north entrance to the passage normally covered only by the gate seen in the picture here, or is there a solid door that is simply not visible in the picture because it is folded back behind the tiled wall? If there is no solid door there, then the passage would always be visible to some extent, even if normally unlit. But why would there be both a solid door and a gate? (Obviously, I haven't been to that location recently.)
