Naturally the MTA posted the Sunday Shoppers Special for Sundays on their website without posting the actual schedule. Does anyone have that available?

What I like about these runs is that they operate as a normal train, and it feels like they never left. When I rode the BMT Centennial at Brighton this summer it didn't feel quite like that, it felt more like an operating display. I guess that is all it really was.

I just got an email from the New York Transit Museum, and the times that they released are the same as what I posted. Keep in mind that, on the road, things can happen, between the "E" trains coming from Jackson Heights, the "F" trains coming from Brooklyn, etc.

Yes, I see that. But since the exact times are slightly different, it would benefit the railfans here to know the exact times in case, for example, they are running a tad late and would otherwise think they missed the train when it doesn't actually leave until 2 minutes after the time you posted.

IIRC, that is this years's (2015).
When i rode the train last year, we waited at 34th for the train and it was 6 or 7 minutes late.
Regular trains came by first, so we waited.

I made the timetable for the Diamond Jubilee Lo-V special in 1979 and was told that the existence of the supplement timetable was merely an authorization for the train to run and that as an extra, it didn’t really have to adhere to the exact times printed. You have to keep that in mind, since, if the road is delayed for any reason, the road train must get preference and the extra has to wait. If you take a close look, you will see that the supplement schedule only contains the times for the special train and not the “normal” trains operating before during and after it which a standard supplement timetable would have.

I agree, but one of the posters mentioned that he might think he missed the train if it were on time only to find out it was late. Actually, in certain circumstances on a supplement a train can leave ahead of its scheduled time if that is how the supplement is arranged.

Now I think I see what could be the reason for the T/D at 2nd Avenue, besides the Gift Shop on B6.

Some F's will operate on the weekends of 12/13 and 12/20 between 179th St and 2nd Ave. While the Museum Train is running, those extra F's will only be able to turn back on B5 Track.

Very interesting indeed.

And also, which could be some interesting moves going uptown during those same two weekends (12/13 and 12/20), as northbound "D" trains will operate along the 8th Avenue line as locals from West 4th Street to 145th Street. Thus, causing them to switch over past Broadway-Lafayette, and then again south of West 4th Street onto A2 track, sharing with the "E".

"A" & "C" trains will operate as northbound expressess along A4 track, and between Canal Street and 145th Street. On the weekend of 12/27, the "D" will be split in two sections: 205th Street-34th Street and Atlantic/Pacific-Coney Island. Everything else is normal, per se.

You raise a valid concern. It's debatable. Let me explain:

The Railfan in me just loves this stuff. I've volunteered at three Museums and enjoyed every bit of it. The hands on experience, the history of the Subway, being able to share my hobby with others....It's a wonderful thing! When I posted the info it was with the intent of being able to share with others my passion, my enthusiasm. Railfans like myself will soak it all in. I want to know where this old train is going! What route, what time, what equipment is involved. The info was intended to be useful for those that like to see the old gals on the move.

I think that I wanted to bring exposure to the preservation movement. The persons involved with the operation of the old equipment and those that maintain it should be commended for their dedication; for without these folks cars like 381 would still be sitting in dead storage at Coney Island Yard waiting for the big day when it finally turned a wheel! Hey, if you see someone operating the Excursion Train (or others), thank 'em! They helped to bring life back to a piece of the past.

As a dedicated Worker for which I am, I may need to reconsider my stance on posting information such as this. I certainly don't intend to step on anyone's toes and I don't want ANYONE stepping on mine! If revealing the Holiday Train's routing was a bad thing, then I probably shouldn't have disclosed information about the BMT Celebration.

I'll close with this: Is routing information a top secret thing? I guess it depends on who you speak to!

-Stef

FYI, I'm not upset about this....Just thinking very loudly right about now.

In my opinion, the routing information should not be "top secret", since the evidence is not only seen in the YouTube clips, but can also be found in the Track Map book as well...

In addition, there are some other things out there which should be kept "top secret" compared to the routing information.

Again, this is just my opinion...

if the General Orders are FoIL-able they are not sensitive information... I get this question a lot, I maintain a few applications containing NYS financial data... but the data being reported is all allowed to be released by FoIL [basically budget & spending information], so we don't need to require crazy hoops to allow employees to access it from outside work. Compared to health, tax, and police data, which is extremely sensitive and has a significant number of barriers between the outside world and the applications (and for that matter, the physical equipment)...

I doubt there is anything secret about the schedule for the holiday nostalgia train.

On the other hand, the advance information about the recent Billy Strayhorn special may have been something the TA preferred not to make public. One press release claimed they were not releasing information about where and when the train would run due to concerns about possible overcrowding. But neither the train nor the platforms at 145th St. were actually overcrowded. Probably, they didn't mind having the information released to a niche audience like that of SubChat. 145th St. was a good choice for where to start (and end) that train for two reasons:
(1) the double-width uptown platform on the lower level helps avoid overcrowding; that is where the band played before boarding the train. And
(2) 145th St. is probably the station that Mr. Strayhorn had in mind as the destination to take the A train to; that is where "Sugar Hill" begins, according to Wikipedia.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. B5 and B6 split off from B1 and B2, then there's a diamond between them outside 2nd Avenue. B5 and B6 are tail tracks through the station.

The only way I can think of to have a southbound train run to 2nd Avenue, couple up with a car already parked on one of the tail tracks, then head for Pitkin is to reverse on B4 north of the West 4th Street diamonds.

I wasn't specific, sorry.

The question was: if the Excursion Train is travelling northbound to 2nd Avenue from Pitkin Yard, could it reverse north of the station on B2 (then proceed into B6)? If it cannot reverse north of 2nd Av on B2, then it would have to travel to north of West 4th St to turn on one of the express tracks.
